Melting Kickstand Rubber
« on: July 10, 2013, 06:08:15 PM »
So, it's been relatively hot here in Missouri for the past week or so and I've started to notice that the rubber foot on my (550) kickstand is melting a little bit onto my (stock) pipes.  :o

Anyone else have a problem with this? I assumed that rubber was made to withstand some pretty hot temps.

I'm basically a noob compared to the others on here but that sounds uncommon. I live in FL and we get some pretty nasty heat and I've never had this happen with either of my bikes. There's a few ebay listings for these if you end up replacing it, other than that I'm not much help

I don't have rubber feet. :)
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Isn't there a rubber bumper that fits on the bottom of the exhaust?  I think its item 61 on the muffler parts list (Bike Bandit).  I thought that the kickstand hit that before it could come into contact with the exhaust.

There's definitely one for the center stand but I don't believe there's one for the kickstand. Unless I'm mistaken. Just strange that is only happening all of a sudden.

Sounds really hot, any new discoloration on the header? Check the plugs.

I don't know about the 550 specifically, but from a design/engineering standpoint I can't imagine Honda ever designed something that could touch the pipes. Must be a stop missing or its a stand from a different model year etc.

Just doesn't sound right.  Check a microfish.

Good point. I'll check for any missing parts on the micro tomorrow. Thanks!

The rubber should not touch the exhaust. The rubber tip is there to kick the stand out of the way if you try and ride away with it down, instead of possibly jacking the bike into the air on your first left turn.
Anyway, something is wrong. If you have the stock exhaust I suspect the stand itself is bent or the pivot has been bent or damaged, possibly that part of the frame is rusted and weak allowing the pivot to shift (this is a typical spot for internal frame rust since water will collect there if it gets inside the tubing).
