SHORTEN YOUR CABLES ALL BY YOURSELF. EASY...
« on: August 08, 2006, 09:03:04 AM »
I finally sourced the little buggers.

After my throttle cable broke a month ago I figured that it was binding due to the routing - of course, I had routed it that way because there was so much slop since i switched to drag bars.

This little item was my saviour.

KEEP IN MIND - I HAVE NOT ORDERED THIS PARTICULAR PART - I HAVE SOME ON ORDER AND CAN REPORT ON FITMENT SOON...

hey cbj, they are what we in the uk call solderless nipples  :D, i personally only use them as a get me home as they are not as good as a soldered nipple  ;), mick.

"solderless nipples", indeed!

"not as good" - no argument there - feel like giving us a primer on making the real thing?

I,m usually very careful to keep hot solder away from my nipples, but if you do want to solder your cable-
open up the hole in the nipple to a 'V' shape and feed the cable through and then splay the strands out to fill the 'V'.  Solder to fill up the space but remember that electricians solder that has the flux in as a core to the solder is not really suitable for this job.  The strands of the cable are either stainless or like piano wire and you need to use an acid based flux. Wash off well when finished to remove any residue of flux..

Or, you can silver solder them with a torch and brazing flux.  On the down side to that method, you have the possibility of the silver traveling through the strands and making the cable solid for about 1/4" or more.  Silver solder works with stainless, mild steel or brass very well.

that seems a little counter-intuitive to me, steve...wouldn't you want, particularly, the first 1" of the cable strands to remain flexible coming out of the throttle slide?

That's why I said "....on the down side,"  You can do it without the aforementioned problem if you're careful with the heat.
