Reassembled engine breakin
« on: July 22, 2013, 08:46:52 AM »
I am getting close to having my engine completely reassembled (although wiring will be another matter). It has been a long time in progress and I am sure there is all sorts of dust and detritus that has managed to get in there. I have tried to be very liberal in application of engine assembly lube, but what do I need to do to make sure nothing bad happens once I start trying to fire it up? Should I just put oil in it and turn the engine over a bunch of times by hand, drive it around for an hour or so and then change the oil?

Also, how do I make sure the oil pump is working correctly before I try to start it?

If you try to get oil pressure by spinning the engine with the electric starter it will not work.

As soon as it does START UP it should show good oil pressure.

Just put the right oil and right amount in the oil tank.
Also when you put the oil filter on you can put a little oil in there before you
bolt that on.

Remember it is a dry sump system.
As soon as you put oil in the oil tank that oil goes right down to the pump.

Around town driving and vary the speed when breaking it in.

I may have my terminology wrong, but isn't the 550 a wet sump cause the oil just pools in the bottom and the transmission sits in it? The oil pump sucks the oil through the screen and pumps it to the head. Right?

Nothing wrong with your terminology. The 500/550 is a wet sump motor - no oil tank.
