750 like power from a 550?
« on: July 10, 2013, 04:07:57 pm »
Hello everybody. I haven't been on here since I sold my '72 750. I'm getting that gotta have a bike itch again and I've found a deal on a 550 somewhat close to me. I'm worried about power though. My '72 750 just had UNI pods and a 4-1 without a baffle and I want to say an 18/48 gears. I guess I want to know what it take to get a 550 up around the 65hp range. I'm wantin it be a daily rider so if these numbers are race only territory for the 550 I'll hold out for something else.

65 hp   :P
start with a 650 engine  and bore and resleeve it to a 64.5 mm [boldor]  piston  add a set of 29cr.s meayby than you get a 60 hp [rearwheel]   stay with the 650 cam  for road use

but most 750 dont get 55 rearwheel hp

listen to gerrit man...

getting REAL 65rwhp out of 550 c.c. is road race tune territory indeed.
but if your aim is getting that kind of power out of the smaller block motor (way lighter than the 750's), look also at paulages build. a CB650 motor pushed out to 720 something could do it.

Alright well I guess the 550 is out of the question now. I just love the grunt my old 750 had and it walked all over my friends KZ550. 750 frames and engine show up on Craigslist from time to time so I should be able to piece one together easy enough. Thanks guys!

It's relatively easy to get to mid 50's on the 550 then the price starts going up! But I will tell you a 550 with a few pounds shed and 50+rwhp will embarass a stock 750. Take a look through the dyno posts to see what stock 750's develop.

That said I'm a 750 guy so I know where you're coming from

Have you thought of using a turbo? You can get a nice power increase and retain street manners, if you do it right.

Yeah I already have a turbo neon project in the works. Forced induction adds up fast when done right :) I regret selling my 750 and I think another 750 my be the only way for me.

If you can weld and do your own fab work a turbo would be way cheaper than a big bore or any serious engine mods and would smoke a stock 750 all day!

I was looking into big bore, head work, and aftermarket cam for my 750 but I went turbo, I built it for way cheaper and if I blow it up I could just get a new motor and put the turbo set up on the new motor. Its a everyday bike around town or 800 mile road trip no problems. The power increase from the turbo is unreal and once you feel the boost kick in you will never own another bike with out one.

I think you missed the point, the 750 does not have in stock form or with the mods you listed anywhere close to 65hp at the rear wheel. The torque of the 750 cannot be easily obtained by the 550 but the 550 with hp and torque boosted to mid 50s will be much faster than any stock 750. The 650 cam in a 550 stock motor makes it much more entertaining and the light nimble handling of the 550 is much more desireable to me.

You make a good point! and the turbo set up would be adding weight. and another kicker to the turbo setup would be the need for a fuel pump and boost refrence fuel pressure regulater.
