Look at reply #298, on page 12 of this thread. Basically, you need to connect one end of the field coil to ground, and the other to the F terminal on the reg. It shouldn't make any difference which end goes where.

OK! THIS SET UP WORKED!

I cut the wires off of a stock R/R. And with the help of this thread, came up with this.
All the color codes on the R/R wires matched the 82 cb650 wiring diagram I used from "Dave's Ultimate Guide"

I hope this helps someone as much as others helped me.

The rectifier is ebay item 180947391161
The regulator is from ebay also, but look around on this thead for suggestions because I wish the one I have was smaller, and when it needs replaced I'm going with something different. Mabey the "plug and play" porshe one they talk about on the previous page.

Quick question for the experts here:

I followed this thread, added a Ford regulator with an eBay rectifier and so far everything has been going great.  I have about 600 miles on the bike since getting it on the road a few months ago and haven't needed to touch a battery charger.  Recently I mounted a little LED charge indicator on my bike just as a safeguard to ensure I'm getting >13v when I should be.  For the most part it's been working well, with a "green" LED above 3,000 RPMs, showing that I am above 13.2V.  Here's a thread I posted about that: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=113261.0

I've noticed that at times when I'm at least 10 minutes into my ride, the indicator shows that my charge dips below 13.2V for a short time (less than a minute), and then it switches back to green (which means above 13.2v).  This happens sometimes at 80MPH on the highway while I'm constantly well above 3k RPM. 

So here's my question:  is this expected?  Should the battery voltage fluctuate like this during a ride?  Does the charging system work in cycles when the battery is fully charged?  Is there some other reason why the voltage would dip down temporarily?

Hmmm....it didn't happen at all on my 30 mile ride home just now. I think the bike has been wet (rained on) when it's happened recently.  Maybe I have an exposed connection somewhere.  The bike was dry on my way home today, and the indicator was green all the time while the bike had any kind of above-idle RPMs.  My bike really loves this cool whether too. 

Just another thing to take a look at over the winter I guess.

I've only put about 80 miles on my bike since doing this modification, and I don't seem to be charging that well. All my numbers test the same, and my battery is new.

I'm not sure what to think. It very well could be that the battery drained while not in use, and I just haven't ridden long, or often enough. But my rides where highway with rpms over 4k.

I'm a little disappointed.

This is my first build so I am having a hard time to be honest. There isn't a "take this blue wire and cut it 10" long" guide of how to rewire. I have tried the generic honda poster diagram but I failed. It is also hard to get matching color wiring without spending a ton of money because of having to buy in bulk. I remember seeing someone said they would make a minimal harness for a cost.

Checked out your link Von. This thread was started to show how the regulator could be replaced with a cheap auto parts unit, and the rectifier with cheap Radio Shack parts, Not how to wire a bike from scratch. There have been many threads on this subject; do a search for minimal wiring. There have been several mentions of the stock charging system color codes on this thread.

A full updated guide is in order. I would love to replace the 40 year old setup.

I might start a new post to clean it up and reserve the first few posts and always keep those updated instead of having to go through pages of discussions.

79 cb650, new rotor and new battery. R/R that was on the bike went bad as 1 of the stator brushes wore down causing intermittent charging and a very dim headlight on the night drive home from work. Changed stator from parts bike, it had good long brushes.  I tried the r/r back on for testing battery volts and it went up over 15 volts at 4000 rpm and got quite hot to the touch. Tried my spare from parts bike and it leveled out at 14.70/71 volts and back down to 14.68/69 volts@4000 rpm, plus this one got hot to the touch as well. So both r/r's are toasted; what i was wondering was i picked up a Motorcraft ford regulator off a 70's series 3/4 ton from junkyard for $5. Can i wire up this regulator and it work with one of the cb650 r/r units i have by just using the rectifier side of the 650 r/r box? Don't know if it has been tried but if i get rising volts then the rectifier side must be converting and regulator side is going to crap out. This make sense to anyone?
