    the colors are green, black, white.   looks just like all the pictures.
   as for where they go. i don't have a computer right now. and all i can do is read the forums on my blackberry.  which i don't get pictures on, unless theres a link :( and the pdf manuals are on my broken computer.
     kinda stuck.    thanks

  OK i think i figured it out, thanks for everyones input.  ill post some results in a few days when i get to ride again!

 OK so i hooked everything up did a few test. ran some extra fuses during my testing just in case.
  turned the key on a presto!! the magic smoke began. :( the new voltage regulator is burning up.
 i rechecked the wiring everything seems perfect.
 so now I'm back at square one. even my electronics savvy friend is stumped.
   ran the original voltage regulator and its fine.   made sure all wires wern't damaged after the first or 2ND meltdown.

  figured it all out at about 5 am PST.  the terminals on the regulators were marked differently then the schematic i was looking at. so i sat down with the bike, and regulator and traced it all out.
 ran it for about 5 minits and I'm very impressed how well it adjusts to load, engine speed and sudden changes.

I thought I had the terminals the same on the schematic as on the regulator... In what order are your terminals?

Hey Pinhead, you mentioned a "cheap walmart battery" lasting 3 years.  Can you tell me the model number and price.  Would appreciate it, I need a battery!

I looked a few weeks ago at walmart's m/c batteries, they seem to have one for a 750A, but not for K or F bikes.  If I remember correctly, the A-bike batteries were a little higher on the CCA's and were physically taller than the regular K/F bike batteries.

Does anyone know if they'll fit a K or F bike?

I thought I had the terminals the same on the schematic as on the regulator... In what order are your terminals?
i will double check rhis afternoos when i get up.  i was way tired and wanting the job done. i even for got to eat.
 and i will get some pics posted too, not mounted yet but its in there.

funny you ask. i tried to post the answer last night but my pics were to big.

 mine went like this.

  I = not used (dummy light)
  A=  wire from battery( used to monitor voltage) add this or it wont charge
  S= ignition switch (black from original voltage regulator)
  F= Field coil ( white from stock voltage regulator)

Don't you have the "I" and "S" switched around?

I'm going to have to go out and double-check my wiring to make absolutely sure the diagram is correct.

I'm going to have to go out and double-check my wiring to make absolutely sure the diagram is correct.

I downloaded the diagram directly from the original post, I haven't gotten to the point on my bike where I can test for myself so I want to be sure the diagrams I have are correct.  Thanks for taking a second look P-H.

Does anyone think it would be cool to have a charging indicator light, like the original ford diagram had?

did you run a new wire from the positive battery terminal to the A terminal. this is necessary for the regulator to read the voltage and adjust!

I followed this thread and fried my wiring which may have been my own fault b/c I'm not an electronics wiz and am trying to make my own wire harness, i also had some questions if any one wants to shed some light on it

1. Does the wire coming from the two single phase rectifiers to battery + have a fuse in it, if so what size?
2. Does the vr730 regulator use a fuse battery wire also?
3. What is the best way to bypass the other two wires coming from the alternator unit, I believe they are the neutral safety and the oil light. If they arent what I thought they were (just for discription, they are the other two wire coming from the same plug as the 3 yellow wires and the green and white wire that go to the rectifiers and regulator) what are they?

Any input any at all is appreciated

 Well ill tell u what! Its about time I took some pics so I'm gonna do it tomarrow @ the shop!

 NOW I'm going to do this off memory so bear with me.

No you don't need to fuse the yellow wires
A fuse on the lead from the batter to the vr730 is a good idea but I don't have one and I just remembered my bike is still in orange after it killed itself Christmas eve! Hmm ok offtrack
So fuse on voltage wire yes good idea, but I don't and have had no problems yet!
 Kinda hard to remember this all when I can't see everything on my blackberry!  
If you have any more question let me know ill be on my desk top in a few, I'm finishing up here in my shed.

 OK now on the desktop.
the other 2 wires are oil light. that's the one coming from the 1" approx round thing with a hex/Phillips bolt. the other should be the neutral light(not 100% sure)

 the wire from the rectifiers i believe does go thru the fuse block 15amp main.
i really wish i had my bike here to look now.
but the other 2 from the oil and neutral lights should be in the same connector. but maybe yours is diffrent. 
and i had the side off a 550 last night so I'm trying not to use that as a reference too much

thanx  queeg, I will run a fuse on the regulator if its not fried. do you know a good way to test the vr730 to see if it fried? And as far as the lights I could just wire nut those off and not see any problems right?  If you ever get around to it some pics of this setup would help, I dont know why my wiring job didnt do the trick but its probably right in front of my face. Thanx  for your input.

i had a test meter on the battery as i did the start up. if its fried it wont work at all. or have really low readings.
at idle i was getting 12.4v
and at 5k rpm i was like 13.8v
i did test higher but i dont remember what i got, like 14.2 at 7+k rpm.

 after that it just worked. did the same on mt g/f's bike before i started paonting it.
it ran a little higher but i also got a heavy duty version of the vr730. was also like 4 dollars cheaper at the time.  same case size . and everything. i didnt gut it yet as ill do that when i put the electrical back into the bike.

Hi!

The electronic regulator replacements are done by two different members of a German "CB Four Club":

Use the "Börse" link on the top and then "Zubehör" on the left side. They both ask you to send in your original regulator and exchange the relay with their electronics. Don't know if they would ship overseas but maybe it's useful as an inspiration.
