CB550F GSXR Front and Rear
« on: July 26, 2013, 08:16:46 AM »
So... I have been pulling apart te old 550F lately and have ordered all my parts to put the GSXR front end on it, but now I am looking at the rear.

Anyone have input as to how to have matching wheels.

Either GSXR wheels front and back (Prefferable becasue I love the two discs up front) in which case the back end will need some serious modification i assume.

Or CB wheels in which case the GSXR front end will need some mods.

I would prefer to have the GSXR wheels, but also would like to keep the rear springs.

Any thoughts, pointers, or suggestions?

Phil71... How did you do that??

Did you need to build that swingarm?

If so, any dimensions?

Cheers

By the way, that looks freaking awesome!

that's not mine, Just showing you that it's possible. I don't  know whose bike it is, but the swingarm looks to be a modified OEM to me. From what, I don't know.

Ah, i see.

I dont think there could be a whole lot to it.

6 pieces of steel, 6 welds, voila.

Im sure it will be as simple as that ;)

Might want to sketch that up as there is some precision drilling and welding of tubes for the bearing/bushes and the bit for the adjusters for the axle.  Width of the swingarm front might require custom work for it if you aren't building an entire swingarm but adapting an existing one.

there's precident!

Thats poorly done, way too long in the rear.... here's how its done...

Mono shock section cut out and the whole arm shortened, the early GSXR arms bolt straight into the 750 frame, Also, the GSXR750J and GSXR1100K had a 4.5 inch rear wheel which fits much better than the later 5 and 5.5 inch rear rims, thats a 4.5 inch rear rim in that picture. The gsxr 4.5 inch rear wheel also fits in the stock Honda swingarm...

Thsta a stock swingarm in those last 2 pics, you will still have to have a small amount machined off the GSXR sprocket carrier and use a CycleX 10 offset front sprocket to get the chain lined up, not to hard at all really....

Hope that helps.. ;)

Whoa!!! Retro Rocket, I could dead set kiss you right now!!

I had been looking into it and was starting to feel like I had jumped the gun and in way over my head.

But the 4.5inch rear wheel fits perfect? Thats good news.

Any idea which model came with the 4.5inch? Am i being lazy with my research? probably.

Is that your bike?

Unless you are a 21 year old blonde with big boobs i think i may resent being kissed by you, if you just happen to be the blonde mentioned i'll pm you my number... ;D

Yes. thats one of my bikes, I actually mentioned in that last post the models the wheels came from..

the 1988 GSXR750J and 1989 GSXR1100K had a 4.5 inch rear wheel
Those model wheels share the same axle diameter as the Honda so if using the stock arm all you need to do is have some spacers made up to centre the wheel and put on a 10mm offset front sprocket then machine whats needed off the GSXR sprocket carrier to make it all line up....Of course you will have to run the gsxr rear brake as well....

Use a GS500 swing arm, it's quite a bit shorter than a GSX-R one (I forget exact difference)

Retro rocket, I'm blonde, but lacking the rest :)

I have found a rear wheel in eBay, what did you use for the front? Just the matching wheel of that same bike? Which forks did you use?

RetroRocket has done a good job fitting and integrating the swing arm onto the bike. Professional versus some hack jobs sometimes seen.

Front is a 3.5 x 17 on  a 1989 GSXR1100K model 43mm frontend, I am having custom triple clamps made up for the front end because i wish to retain the stock, or close to the stock geometry so it doesn't change the handling too much.  If you are still looking at a gsxr swingarm see if you can get an early [1885-87} GSXR 750 arm, they are still quite substantial and are shorter than the 1100 Item I have used. There is a pic around here somewhere with a CB500 race bike using older model GSXR 18 inch rims and a modded 750 GSXR swingarm...

Plenty of pics here..

Retro, just saw your in Brizzy, im from Sydney but moved to USA a few years ago. Good Times :)

It seems the hayabusa front rim and the 1988 GSXR 750 have the same dimesnsions, if that really is the case, ill be getting both rims off the 88 gsxr.

With the back end, did you use the GSXR axle as well, or was the CB axle usable?

Trying to get all the info before I start spending more money :)

Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Ducati wheels look the same and are used on various models.
The only real difference is the rim width and colour
I'm using pre 97 Katana wheels on a few bikes as they are generally narrower (lets face it, you don't need a 6" rim with 190 tyre on a 50hp bike)
The front's are pretty much all standard width, either 3.00" or 3.50" but the rears vary from 4.00" to 6.00"

For the rear, if you use the stock swing arm you can use the Honda axle, same diameter as the 88 GSXR 750...  In saying that, you can mix and match bearings in a lot of combinations to suit almost anything....  Do know someone, or do you have access to a lathe or mill for making the spacers you will need and for machining the GSXR sprocket carrier..?.. The hub section of the Busa rim will be different as will the bearings, there may even be slight differences in the design of the rim, I got the 1988 750 rims as a set...

Retro, im going to put the 88 750 rims on the bike, front and back.

THe front has the same dimensions as the hayabusa, should be as simple as putting it in, just making sure axles and bearings are on pint, otherwise, the search begins :)

ah, I was from Baulkham Hills, lived in Pennant Hills most of my life, now living in Michigan.

The 88 front when has the same dimensions as the 2001 Hayabusa, which are the forks I have.

I have a thread in the Project Section of the bike im building, I tried to post a link to it, but the page wont reload for some reason.

I put a couple of links of some of the info I found on the rims.

Any pointers let me know :)

A bearing change should sort out the front if the axle sizes differ...

Hey retro, did you use the 1988 750 wheel up front?

Any insight as to whether how the 1988 gsxr 750 front axle would go in the 2001 hayabusa front end?

Pretty left field question, but figured you may have been there already.

Yes i have the 1988 front wheel but its in a GSXR 1100 1989 model front end that share the same bearings.
You will need the Busa axle to match the front end and then you will have to buy bearings to match the 88 wheel's bearing carrier and axle's dimensions... Too much drama trying to mate the 88 axle to the busa front end, much easier to find bearings to suit....
