Depends on the kind of CB900 you got..  There was a "C" version, which is the custom (or cruiser) styled version, and then there is the "F" version, which is the sport version.  The C is the one that had the dual-range tranny.  I don't know anything more about the trans than that..  I owned a 1982 CB900F, and loved it.  I'm not sure, but I beleive the C version might of had shaft drive?  The F was chain drive, triple disc brakes, and had an oil cooler..

Check over at cb900c.net and you'll find 2 81' CB900s with titles for $250. Don't know how complete they are but, they are in Mass.      Wish they were closer and I had the buck$.

I own one and so has my father.  It's a great bike, if you are looking more in the cruiser range.  It has 10 gears.  5 in low range, and 5 in hi.  Low range is great for around town acceleration.  I usually use the bike by going through the 5 low gears, then switching to hi as though 5 hi is an overdrive.  I've never had a problem with mine.  Shaft drive, oil cooler, air shocks and forks.  The only problem I have is that it is much heavier than my 750.  If you're looking for a cruiser, I would recommend.  Good luck
