Battery not charging
« on: August 01, 2013, 09:09:55 AM »
It seems to be that my battery slowly dies as the bike is ran & ridden. Its to the point where you can start it about one to two times per day. Allowing the bike to sit for a while between starts. As if the battery needs to build up a bit of juice. The lights are very dim and only last a few minutes. Even after riding it around for 15 or so minutes still dont believe its charging. Starter will not click and the horn wont make a peep. It died on me today so I carefully jumped it from my car with the car off. It started right up with the starter.

Im completely new to motorcycles but not engines and mechanics. Im not sure of the failure rate of the generators or what. I believe it could be the regulator/rectifier. If anyone could give me a simple way to test the system so I know for sure there is an issue. The battery was replaced with a new Interstate battery last week.

do a search for "not charging"  or something to that effect using the search button right underneath the "home" button near the top of the page.  you will find a lot of good information about what you're experiencing. good luck.

Hmm. I may have to ride it a bit more. It looks like it is not going to make enough juice idling like a car or at lower rpms. I think I'll try to get her out for a bit and see how she does.

Thanks for the posts guys, I greatly appreciate it. Ill try to give an update soon on the condition.

Before doing that, fully charge the battery with an off-bike battery charger.  Depending on what bike you have, it could take 10 hours of 5000 RPM operation to fully recharge a depleted battery.  You might also avoid using electric start during the battery restoration event.

Maybe I missed it but what bike are we talking about? Or are they all the same and it does not matter?
