non running CBX
« on: July 28, 2013, 08:46:06 PM »
  Hey guys,
I have a chance to buy a 79 CBX, it doesnt run but It turns over with the starter easily. The owner hit a deer and bent the forks slightly (the frame appears to be straight) and its been sitting outside for awhile, all the aluminum is pretty oxidized and overall its in pretty rough (but original) condition with about 45,000 on the clock.
I have the ability to look past all the bad and see the potential but i really dont have a very good idea on what this thing might be worth in its present condition.
   opinions please.
                    thanks

79's are the most sought after.

with a title?  I'd say 2K, the front does not look all that bad. Book value starts at 3500 in fair condition...Larry

Oh..a 79 model in Glory Red. Depends on what he wants but I would say buy it unless it's stupid money.

Looks like it needs a complete go thru and several faded plastic items. Crash bar laying on the ground. Mileage high but even if you did nothing with it the parts are worth a ton. I have seen speedo's go for 3-4 hundred alone. Only year with the 150 clock.

If you plan on putting this on the road I would shop for one already done. They are very expensive to do. Think of it as a Ferrari to a Ford. A valve cover gasket is $100.00 from Honda. Carburetors are $1200.00 by Mike Nixon. You get the idea.

Keep us posted. Still worth buying.

Thanks everyone,
I went out to look at it yesterday, I get the feeling that this bike has a lot of sentimental value to the owner, he is the second owner and has owned it for 20+ years, after he hit the deer the bike has just been sitting and he says it kills him to see it like that. I pulled up on my built 750 and his jaw about hit the ground, we talked for about 45 minutes or so and got along really well. Last night he sent me an email basically saying that he really wants me to have it. he was originally asking $3,000 but i think I'm willing to offer around $1,500 on it.
I'm not even sure what I would do with it, I,m really not interested in parting it out and i know that a full resto would be huge $$$ and effort I also know that I get a weird boner every time I see a CBX streetfighter, I just feel like a CBX is like the holy grail of vintage honda finds (no offense to sandcast guys).

Even if you decided not to do anything at this time it's worth it for the right price.

You will never lose money just hanging on to it for a few years. 79/80 models are getting very expensive in any condition and are the "one" to have. I like the fairing model myself for several reasons. Just me.

If it was closer I would be interested in it myself.

The tank, depending on condition, is worth more than you paid for the bike. Rear cowl is getting high, carburetors are worth $800 and up. On..on..and on.

Looks like a good project!  Stock blinkers will set you back a bit.  But look around, other model blinkers can be made to fit.  They are generally chrome, but that isn't a big problem.  Honda still sells original mirrors cheaper than you can find them on ebay many times.

I remember the cbx's parked together at the last Steamboat MC week just before the turn of the century. There were about a dozen or so.  Now it seems you hardly see them in any number at any events.

Like many classic bikes and cars they are leaving the shores by the container load.

Started right up after fresh gas and new oil!!
Blew a hornets nest and a ton of who knows what out the exhaust but after it ran for a minute it settled right down into a nice idle.
New forks are on the way  8)
