Problem getting into 5th / staying in 5th
« on: July 20, 2013, 04:33:16 PM »
So I'm about 50 miles in on an engine rebuild (rings gaskets) and a tranny swap from eBay.

The bike is running well and shifts perfectly from 1st to 4th but then in 5th it pops in then out then I can put it back in and it falls back to a "false nutral" and then will go back in to 5th.

It will stay in 5th but I never know when it will disengage...

I am running the bike in the low RPMs and really if the engine was broken in I would not be shifting into 5th when I am....but I figure it should still stay there.

I'm guessing it a worn shifter fork or dog and I should have measured all the tranny-swap parts...but maybe there's something I can do/try without splitting the cases?

Wishful thinking?

What oil are you running? Seriously...not trying to derail this into an oil thread but proper oil facilitates easy shifts.
Odds are you have a bearing or for that 5th gear's dogs...
Unless oil fixes it, you will be splitting the cases to go through the gearbox.

I will be doing an oil change after I go through my first tank of gas (that's around 100 miles)...

What do you recommend? Pandora's box!!!

Right now it has Quakerstate 10w40 in there. Not synthetic.

Quake State and Penzoil are high ash content oils, would not be my pick. Castrol 4t over Valvoline and others. Motul is very good oil if you can find it and probably best if you can find it after breakin.

So I am at the 100mile mark and going to do an oil change — going to try to find MOTUL 7100 20w50

Is synthetic OK at this point? Why not 10W40 like the book says?

Run a proper motorcycle oil that has the additives necessary for your wet clutch etc. See if that helps. If not, it sounds like your cases are coming apart again...  :o

Don't think different oil is going to help with only 100 miles on it since the rebuild, but at least you can do the tranny without taking the top end apart.
