Need info on project bike
« on: July 28, 2013, 02:38:15 PM »
Hey guys. I'm currently looking at a '73 cb750 in running condition. It has original paint in good condition for the age. Is there certain years i should lean towards/ stay away from?  I know nothing of these year model bikes. I am wanting a running bike that just needs work. I didn't really want to start from the box. Thanks for any advice you can give.

They are all good years :)

More important is probably condition and price, titled, lower miles etc.  what are the specifics on the bike you're looking at and how much?

The bike in the picture looks like a 1972 which was a good year.Sometimes the bikes were titled in the year they were sold and not the actual year they were made.

All the major modifications were done by 72 AFAIK (until the F2/K8)
Cams and carbs were matched for various years, if you get lucky you may find one with Suzuki GSX 'flatslide' carbs

This particular bike is a 72 but is titled 73. Dealer(gasp!)is asking $2100. I am very impatient by nature.  Lol. I'm doing it right this time. I don't plan on buying from a dealer. I would rather make a private purchase.
I have heard a few years were harder to get parts. ??
Im planning on it being a daily driver. I will treat it the same as my newer bikes. Am i on the right page with this idea?
I don't like full restorations, i prefer good solid examples that are driven not just admired.  I'm so ready to get one I'm considering selling the ninja 250!  I would miss it so.

The 71-76 K bikes are the easiest to get parts for, still tons of stuff out there. The 75-76F model,77-78 improved F model and the 77-78 K bikes were all 2 year runs and not as much crap, err I mean stuff out there. Very early bikes in great shape command the best price on the market but any example that is original and unmolested will do well.  Good luck on the hunt.

I would agree with the post that says they are all good, but there are differences depending on the year. I'm a novice but am studying hard. When doing maintenance or trying to keep a bike factory correct, one just needs to be aware. 1972 for example, has electrical differences as well as seat- handle bars-- switches, etc from both later and earlier models.Fork seals from 1973 and 1974 are the same part, but different to change out on the 1972. For me it is much easier, for example, to replace fork seals on my 1974 than on my 1972. I suppose this comment doesn't amount to all that much, but could save a little time and money when it's time to work on whatever you buy.

This forum is outstanding for advice-- ask as much as you can-- these guys are tough to stump.

Good hunting!!!

^^^^ thanks. I hate to pester people. So many times people on forums are lazy. They expect someone to answer all their questions instead of searching and looking for the often already posted info. Right now I'm mainly searching, reading, and lusting!!

Nope, but a friend picked up a 1975 CB750 last week that had had some work done and had Suzuki Flatslide carbs fitted which is what made me think of it

Looks pretty clean, around my way $2100 for a nice condition rider is a good price. I don't like the 2-1 turnout exhaust pipes but that's just a personal preference, have fun with it if you buy it. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a nice stock early model 750, can't wait till the right one pops up.

I think they keep getting sucked down and east to Michigan where Ekpent (Eric) buys them. Although now that he has finally bought a 550 maybe that will free up some 750's for the rest of you.

I didn't like the exhaust either. I'm leaning towards a 4-1 with a canister on the end. I don't want mofern sportbike look but i didn't want old school. The wife says she needs a car first. :-\ she's had yhe civic for 17 years and 384,000 miles. I do believe she might be right this time. So for now i will just keep tabs on other builds and gain some knowledge.  Maybe i can stumble across a deal i can't pass up.

Bahhh, that civic is just broken in lol. It's got double the miles left in it, snap that 750 up quick fast. Getting harder and harder to find nice stock cb750's at a reasonable price, around here you have 4000$ and up nice stockers or hacked up basket cases someone lost motivation on. Sad...

I know man. But you know how it is. And the last four vehicles purchased were bikes. And three of them were mine. I don't have a leg to stand on.

This is good advice.  If the bike pictured is a good runner with title, its worth the asking price.

Good luck
