Terry, my grandfather was an Orangemen. Probably would not have liked you relations lol.

I haven't changed any tunes. Just disagree with slagging off other countries, other bikes yes. Country no. Lol

Morning all!
Dave, (Raffy) I could lift the front wheel of my CX500 every time I put it on the centrestand, it was easy! But to be fair, even though it weighed as much as a CB750 and had the same horsepower as a CB450, (uuuggghhh) with Murray's 34mm Mikuni carb conversion and a straight thru exhaust system, it can be a fun bike, but the 650 with another 18 BHP is a much better bike, just butt-ugly.

If I hadn't bought my BMW K100RS SE I would have installed the 650 engine in my Custom, and with Murrays carbs and my pipes, it would have done proper wheelies! Oh, and "Dude" is a pretty common term here too, so I don't know if that's a hint to someone's true identity.........

Actually Terry, the CX500 had 50bhp but more like 37-38 at the rear wheel, very similar to the CB550 in that regard. The cb450 twin was about 47 bhp with only about 35hp at the rear wheel. The cx500 weighed 450 lbs, so, not it was not a light twin.
You are saying the cb650 custom of the 79-82 era/chopperesque bike had 68 bhp? I don't remember those figures, yes it was faster and a better motor. It took the knowledge of the cb550 and cb750 and improved upon it with a better head design, a good tensioner system, etc.
Put that motor in a reinforced 550 frame or a custom frame with standard bike proportions or a road race bike layout and you have a fun bike.

Or are you referring to the cx650. A better motor with better power to weight and better clutch.

The maggot (cx500) is a good reliable bike but it does not hold a candle to the cb500/cb550 or bigger cb bikes. I like it but, I won't shed a tear when she's gone. It is unique and ugly and it can be a fun bike on curvy roads with decent rubber. It is a good commuter bike because of its reliability. Are there better? Easily, yes. Would I trade it for a big black naked Goldwing? No, but I might if it were that pretty yellow the naked wings used. ;D

The cb750 has what hp figure in stock trim?

Yeah mate, I'm thinking that you should start a thread stating that you think that your  CB650 is the most impressive bike ever made. (by Honda in 1979)

If you think about it, 1979 was a terrible year for Honda, their first DOHC bikes were rubbish, CX500's were overweight underpowered slugs, their dirt bikes sucked royally, and apart from the Goldwings, I can't think of any Honda from 1979 that I'd be proud to have in my garage.

Now while some here wouldn't consider the 650 the ultimate SOHC4, for that dreary dark year of mechanical nothingness, otherwise known as 1979, it'd probably be considered very impressive! ;D
The most impressive bike Honda made in 1979 was without a doubt the CBX... ;)

CBX, but the 1980 black, made in Japan edition is arguably the finest bike ever built.  Mine hasn't been beaten in any contest by a wang, 450 or CX500, some of the best bikes ever, yet it remains unbeaten.  It would be difficult to argue otherwise given the facts I have presented.

I think if I could choose the three finest motorbikes of all time to have in my garage, I'd probably have a black '80 CBX, a 1982 KZ 1000 LTD with a 1075 or 1120 kit, and lets see, tough call,  probably a '74 CB750 with an ST1100 handlebar.  Yep, that'd probably do it...

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
The biggest nightmare in 1979 was without a doubt adjusting the valves or synching the carbs on a CBX... ;)

There you go Scott, I added some reality to fix that statement for you.......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Actually, setting the valves wasn't so bad, as once the parts were mated the clearances didn't change much; it certainly didn't need to be done every 3000 miles. I stand by my claim that the CBX was the most impressive bike in 1979; a cop in Colorado went out of his way to admire them, and then warned warned us about a speed trap on the route ahead. When was the last time something like that happened on your Wang? ;)

I'm way too tired to engage in witty banter right now, but I have taken umbrage to some of your responses so far, so prepare yourselves all for a mental flogging when I can see straight again. Have a great day/night men, I'm gonna go drop a steak in the pan, I haven't eaten since 7am, and right now, I could eat the crutch out of a low flying duck! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Translation: Tucks his tail betwen his legs and runs away. ;D ;)

You see right there the raft between the understanding of proper English and "Americanlish", my generosity is seen by the lesser gifted and mentally impaired as weakness?

Oh what a tragedy it is that your cowardly ancestors, American whores and peasants, the bastard children of British convicts, lead by your "Founding Fathers" (mostly British Criminals) sought to tuck their tails between their legs and run away from the Empire. If they hadn't America wouldn't be a country of Fender-like wannabes, whores and druug addicts it'd be a much better place, and you personally, would know what the fcuk you're talking about!

Good Morning all! ;D

Just to set the record straight ....I am of Viking stock only two generations removed from Scandanavia.  No British blood though my ancestors did "service" the English women as their men where too busy buggering the livestock.  At least we know where the Aussies got their fondness for sheep. ;D ;)

So in tribute to my seagoing ancestors I am leaving in the morning on a two week sailing trip....no phone no computer....I dread to think how far this thread will go in that time.

And by the way...the CB750F is the most impressive bike ever.

So goodbye for now as I "tuck my tail between my legs and run away". ;D

Terry, I agree that the 650's were ugly when they rolled off the showroom floor, mine is a little different than stock and I think it has improved it's looks massively with only a few minor touches. ;D

RAF, we were talking about the 79 650's which either came as a standard or a Z, mine being a Z.  The custom came out in 80 ;D.

Yeah, beauty's in the eye of the beholder Andrew, and to be honest, I'd forgotten about the CBX, but I'll let you fight it out with Scott as to which bike was the most impressive Honda built in 1979, it's a pity your 650 wasn't built in 1978............ ;D

'Night all!

I've been having a few problems with the world's cheapest Subaru overheating on a long drive today, but luckily the guru's from the "Ultimate Subaru Message Board" have saved me tearing into the water pump, it might be something as simple as me not properly "Burping" the cooling system after I re-installed the radiator on Thursday.

Thank God my mighty 'Wang wasn't designed by Subaru! ;D

The wang engines are a copy of an early subaru design ;)

Those subaru's are a #$%* to get the air out of, there is a screw in the top of the radiator you have run it with that screw removed while topping up the radiator to get the air out.  Just don't stand with your face over the hole with the screw removed while someone starts the car, don't ask me how i know about this ;D.
