Here's a peak of what's to come.

The gauges are part peal coat, part black metallic. Gauges faces is going to be really close to the CB450's color scheme.

Don't be scared!

New Parts: not much from the ordinary. A a new shift fork and some minor transmissions parts. Valves lapped and checked by Honda. New rings. Minor honing to the cylinders and some polishing in the heads. I'm preparing some uni filters (not pods but more of a factory airbox-restrictive replacement) for it now. New cam chain. Low end was in great shape. Should be installed in the frame over the next few days.

No word from the paint shop yet. I'm pressuring my painter a little into seeing if he can get it done sooner, but may have to wait until Christmas. He's always worth the wait, though. Honda doesn't get hear as good as what I'll get.  All starts with good prep work. :)

I'm really liking the look of those gages, it's going to be one of those little details that just make it!

Thanks! Just got the gauges in. I had to remove the black dishes and put on chrome dishes since they were mismatched.

One thing I've learned so far with restos is to keep the customization "slight". It's those little details is all that's needed to really keep the bike engaging from a "purist" perspective, but also have your own personal touches that can work for anyone.

The goal for this is basically a stocker with some modern touches (gauge face plates, high contrast color scheme, Hagon shocks, braid brake line, tapered steering bearings, bronze swing arm bushings) with some classic touches (cloud silver fenders and fork legs). I just only recently thought that I could have done my side covers with cloud silver (like the Black Bombers), but as always it's best to be on the conservative side for restorations.

Steveo doesn't like Orange + White because Honda didn't do it. :)  He likes Orange + Black. That works, but I prefer higher contrast. For example, Honda's SL bikes looked really cool because of this. When I think of a "modern" feel (which is part of what I'm going for), I think of higher contrast for some reason. We'll see if it all works.

I just found this thread.Read the whole thing. That's some fine work you are doing on this 450, fine work.
I think that sunrise will look fantastic on this machine!

This pic doesn't do it justice, but sunrise looks great on a 450.
Had a stiffy for a bomber tank and couldn't get one , but a partially polished steel tank did it for me,( it still ain't a bomber tank).
Your gauges , engine work, every bit of it is turning out right and nothing over the top, excellent! This whole project is sweet. Can't wait to see the paint.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

The bomber tank will not fit later 450's, if you want the bomber look you need to pick up a K1 tank, I believe that one will go right on, and it's a bit cheaper.

There's a piece of information I would have liked to have known earlier.

Have any pictures detailing how you chromed those parts? That's pretty cool! It's funny that we both have K5s. The K5 never came with a grab bar though (just a neat little side handle which I find more effective for getting the bike on the center stand). What made you go for the grab bar?

Black Bombers are on everyone's list to have, no doubt about it. Our models are really the best mechanically-sound CB450s though, so we can't complain!

Thanks for the fine compliments rob.

Why not upgrade to the electronic ignition?

I have yet to experience the pain of points. I have five 70's Hondas. What's more important is for me to get them all in FANTASTIC shape rather than upgrading a perfectly good new set of points. Not saying that electronic ignitions are bad, but if you take care of points they will do the job just fine! I guess my final answer is "priority." :)

Not saying electronics ignitions are bad, but don't automatically think you need to throw the points in the trash and go electronic* If it ain't broke don't fix it* I still run points on my two 750's and never had any trouble. Ask Bluzboy a member here who has a nice CB750. When he got the bike he inherited a electtonic system a PO had put on bike. He continued to have running problems, but couldn't trace down the problem. I think it even left him stranded a time or two.He got so frustrated he was ready to get rid of his beloved CB. With help from members here found out the culprit was the electronic ignition. Put OEM points back on bike just like it came with 40 years ago and to my knowledge bike runs like a champ and has had no more problems.

WWIW,  I've never "upgraded" to electronic ignition(never  will either) and have never had an ignition failure-but that debate has been covered a zillion times since I've joined the forum...Larry

I think that's what my dad used..

You'll also hear about the important of sticking with an OEM Honda chain when you go back to reinstall...even if it's a bit more expensive.

Made an account just to join in this thread, nice progress so far! Just picked up my first '73 450 to dive into but have no idea what I'm doing. Any hints for a newbie? It runs roughly of course, I'll try to get a couple more pictures up.
