igntion wire BOOT replacement?
« on: August 02, 2013, 11:36:54 AM »
my #2 cylinder is having moments on/off where it's dying.
i just noticed that i can see spark coming out the SIDE of the plug boot...sparking against the top of the inlet where the boot inserts.
i switched the boot with the #3 cylinder...same boot now on #3 position, i see the same sparking.

i wasn't aware that the boots could go bad...is that what's going on here with the #2 boot?
or is there potentially a bigger problem (e.g., wires and coils)?

was planning to order a set of dyna wires...wondering if i should also spend the extra$ for the coils too.
or is the source of problem elsewhere?

Just buy some new resistor caps (plug boots), they're fairly cheap.  Cut the old wires back a tiny bit, then strip 1/8" of the casing back to expose some wire.  Add a little dialectric grease and screw the new caps on.

ok, that's what i was thinking as well.
but the unusual part is that i actually saw was the spark coming THRU the side of the plastic boot...sparking against the inlet.
wtf is up with that??

looks like it actually DOES happen...

"Over time, they slowly burn out and increase in value: at 9500 (9.5k) ohms, they are considered to be "burned out" and can cause several problems, including hard starting and fouled sparkplugs. This can also make the spark jump to the engine or frame (or your leg, in the rain), making for some pretty night effects."
