Petcock question.
« on: August 02, 2013, 12:38:51 AM »
Just ordered a new petcock on eBay. It appears in the photo to not have the sock-like screen filter thing over the valve. With a little research, I learned the PN is 16952-341-671. I found an eBay listing for what looks like the piece: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-900-CB750-Petcock-CB900F-750-CB750F-CB900-VF-700-200-250-300-16952-MA4-671-/330951595954?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d0e4097b2&vxp=mtr

Seems a bit expensive. Is it really worth it/necessary?

I certainly wouldn't pay it. You could buy a pattern petcock for a fraction of that, and rob the filter off it.

Cheaper still, fit a filter in the line after the petcock and before the carb, it will prevent dirt getting into your carbs and easy to change when you need to. Won't prevent dirt ingress into the petcock, but with a clean tank shouldn't be much of a problem.

Just to add to that, not sure if you're looking at the right thing anyway. Dave Silver has PN. 16952-341-671 in stock, doesn't quite look the same from the pictures. Difference between SOHC and DOHC?

Still expensive though!

Depending on the petcock, that screen can be a vital piece. It not only keeps crud out of your carbs but also keeps it out of the petcock. A lot of the Honda petcocks have plastic and rubber internal parts that can be damaged by dirt getting inside. Whether or not you want to pay the $33 for that one is up to you but I wouldn't run without one for too long.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Okay. Well, I have ordered this petcock already at this point: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB350-1968-1973-GASTANK-PETCOCK-OR-FUEL-PETCOCK-REPLACES-OEM-16950-292-000-/370812001773?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item56561e1ded&vxp=mtr

From the image, it doesn't look like it has the screen. Could I just, say, order this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CL175-CB350-CB360-CB450-Replacement-Gas-Fuel-Tank-Petcock-16950-292-000-/151078174871?hash=item232cf60097&vxp=mtr     which looks like it does come with the screen, and then maybe just take the screen and sell the extra petcock? I'm not sure how specific a part like that is. Even $24 seems like a lot, but I suppose if it's vital then it's worth it. I haven't actually taken mine off yet - before I go ordering extra parts, is there a chance there's one on my old one that I could just clean? Also, will I need to order any gaskets or o-rings to replace while installing the new one?

Will this actually fit a 350FOUR? I emailed the guy I bought it from and he said it would.. but now I'm reading more about how it the 350four might have a unique petcock to other CB's? Did I order the wrong part??

It's a 1973 CB350FOUR. I'm going crazy trying to find the correct petcock or make sure I order the necessary parts to make another one work. I wasn't planning on swapping it out until I clean the tank and line it, so I was hoping to just order the right stuff to swap it out in the meantime.

According to the fiche your bike didn't come with a filter:
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1973-honda-cb350g/o/m9221#sch399862

This petcock has an internal filter rather than a strainer covering the inlets. You should be fine with just the petcock you bought.

Okay. I could always just get the external strainer as a precaution, I suppose. HOWEVER, my concern now has shifted to whether or not the part I ordered will INSTALL into my tank.

This is what I ordered: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB350-1968-1973-GASTANK-PETCOCK-OR-FUEL-PETCOCK-REPLACES-OEM-16950-292-000-/370812001773?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item56561e1ded&vxp=mtr

The seller said it would work for a 350F. But now I'm reading that I may need an adapter plate because rather than a screw-in nut, the 350F petcocks are attached by a plate with two small screw holes. Any idea on that?

I was able to track down this site, which if you scroll down seems to carry to correct part: http://honda.motorcyclefactoryinc.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2556050&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1974&fveh=132737

I've emailed them and am waiting for a response.

I suppose I could always just rebuild the one I have... I just figured it'd be easier and relatively cost-effective to just get the part. Didn't think it'd be this complicated.
