Rust tips?
« on: August 10, 2006, 07:37:39 AM »
Does anybody have any magic tips for getting rid of surface rust on chrome? When I got my bike, it had no rust on the fenders, but the surface looked "crazed"...little tiny cracks in the chrome. I've kept it well waxed, but I'm starting to get little specks of rust. You can't even see it from a distance, but it bothers me.

I don't know how nice your chrome is, but I am re-doing a total basket case, and I have a wire wheel attachment on my drill that has brought back some pretty hopeless looking stuff.  If you are concerned about fine scratches, some fine copper wool does very well too, but is more work.

Coca cola rubbed vigorously with a pad of tinfoil can get a lot of rust off of chrome. Wont fix the pits, but will reduce the size of the rust spots considerably.
No.

Brasso works very well. Non abrasive as opposed to the sweater/sandbox method. Also do not have to try to wash it out of your a@@ crack.

I'd rather stay non-abrasive..it's not pitted or anything, just crazed with little specks of rust

Try 0000 steel wool.  Do not use it on aluminum.

If you use the naval jelly prior to the wool sweater, you will be able to weave yourself a nice waterproof jacket.  Start now, winters coming.

Naval Jelly will f-up the chrome I believe. It's good for eating rust, but it would take your finish with it.

I agree. I believe it is phosphoric acid in a jelly form and it's not recommended to get phosphoric acid on chrome/aluminum.

If you have jelly in your lint you might have problems... ;D

I use evapo-rust. Works best when you can dunk a part over night.

I just used naval jelly on an old set of exhaust that were covered.   It works best if you will "knock the top" off of the rust and then let it set a while before rinsing it off.

Green scotchbrite and some wd40 did wonders for mine. And mine are Katrina survivors.
