throttle grip slips
« on: August 10, 2006, 05:33:13 PM »
Actually it's getting worn a bit thin too, but I noticed yesterday that
while crusing I had to keep turning the throttle to keep the speed up.
(first i wondered why wern't my revs coming up like they sould)
The grip was slipping. Should it be glued on or should I get a replacement?

The throttle seems a bit hard to turn maybe too.

The plastic throttle sleeve which has the fittings for the push and pull cables should be firmly attached to the hand grip. Most new grips and sleeved fit very tighly together but some sort of grip glue could be used if necessary.  The sleeve should also move freely on the handle bar end.  Sounds like now would be a good time to get a new set of grips, a new throttle sleeve and a new set of throtlle cables.  None of the stuff should cost much and it should make for a much more pleasurable riding experience

....and if you live in a cooler clime it would be worth putting on Hot Grips or similar, if your electrical system can handle it.

I think they all had two cables pretty early on, K2 forward maybe? Here's a diagram out of the '77 F2 manual. The two cables are #9.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Wow! Thanks. I always thought the 70 750's had 1 then the 71 came out with 2.
Then this 77 only had one on it when I got it. I went out and look real close when you
posted this picture Bob and the second cable is missing but the port is on the
grip for the second cable.
I'll have to get me some cables and do this back right. How does the grip assembly come apart?
And I hope I can eye ball the connection to the carbs.

Thanks again.

It should be captured, or enclosed as part of the right-hand switch assembly.

Use some hairspray when putting the new grips on.  Helps them slip on easily and then holds them tight when it dries, it also doesn't leave a messy residue like glue does when you want to switch the grips again.

in the past I have just shimmed the grip with electrical tape.  never had it slip after that,  actually it was a #$%* to get off the next time.

I ordered the works from Honda dealer today. Should be here on tuesday. I'll just ride it with one cable till then.
But, now that I know it's suppose to have 2, I'll be nervous :)

I once had to use that kill switch on my 78 ;). I had just installed an oil cooler and was going
through some twisties just out from Raleigh, NC. Avent Ferry Road for those around there.
Going out was fine, but on the way back whilst layed over in a curve(and I use to drift it pretty good in a curve),
one of my newly installed oil lines blew off, coating my face shield pretty good.  :o Well as providence would
have it I stood it up straight whilst hitting that kill switch and there was a parking lot to
coast into right in front of me. All was well.
