Custom Fiberglass Tank
« on: August 11, 2006, 10:29:43 AM »
Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to gear up and build my own fiberglass tank. I went to the depot and found the insulation stuff, and I just wanted to make sure it was the right kind. It's called R10 Forumlar, it's pink and it's about 2" thick. Will this stuff work for the base of my mold? I'd hate to build the mold, glass it, and then not have it melt with the solvent!

Thanks,

Evan Ruff

Can you test it in an inconspicuous place with the solvent?  Is it EPS (Expanded polystyrene)? If so, it should prove vulnerable to solvents.  But then you have to be certain to use epoxy resins as vinyl and polyester will also turn it to goo.

How are you planning on sealing the tank against the effects of ethanol?  I was considering glassing a tank but using a vinyl ester resin which is claimed to be chemical resistant.  Problem with it is that the resin would eat polystyrene if I recall correctly.

Yeah I thought about testing it, but I figured I'd ask the forum before ruining the next poor guy who buy's the sheet's project. :-)

As for the glass, TAP Plastics sells the mondo-super resin (epoxy based) that's chemically resistant to everything in the world. You paint the styrofoam with an oil based paint before glassing to mitigate the effects of the resin eating it.
