Topic: Aluminum Engine Screw Kits - Anyone used one from Probolt or Cyclex?

Hi all,
Im just online about to order either a stainless steel hex head engine screw kit, or one of the aluminum ones. 

Im curious to know if anyone has used the aluminum kit and can report if they are a complete kit or just the engine side covers? 

Im not against using SS, and understand that they need to be used with anti-seize, but the aluminum is an attractive option if it is as durable.  Its made from 7075 grade if that helps.

I'm running the Cycle X kit in gun metal grey. It includes all the side covers and valve/breather cover but it didn't include any for the chrome covers (points plate/clutch inspection cover). The fasteners seem very strong and I had no issues with the quality but I did have to trim a couple to make them fit. They didn't come with any list of which length bolt goes where or anything so that did make installation a bit tricky. Mostly I just matched up the old with the new but I ended up with a couple that were a bit too long. Easy to cut the off with my dremel and run a die over them to clean up the end threads again.

Thanks for the fast response IW.  Im really leaning toward the aluminum bolts - I dont like seeing the numbers stamped on SS bolts and wasnt after a super polished finish either.  It wouldnt suit my build.  The pics Im seeing of the aluminum bolts arent showing any number or knurling on the heads so Id say my mind is made up

I might see if I can source some aluminum screws to complete the set for the clutch and points cover.  Does this mean they didnt include the bolts for the starter motor cover as well?

I would not use the aluminum screws. Th 7075 is very strong and light weight but it is also brittle. If it does break it will break on the threaded portion.
Also when similar metals are used together like stainless with stainless the metal is subject to galling.

If you are racing and every single pound will count against you, then maybe it is worth while.

I would go stainless. make sure to put some antiseize on the bolts. I got mine from an ebay seller "alloyboltz" they were all organized very well in seperate little packages.

Check the part charts at cmsnl.com where the bolt sizes/lenghts are shown. I check here to be sure to use correct bolt. I was the first person taking the bike appart and I do not trust what I did 30 years ago. :-)

many thanks for all the feedback guys - I ordered a set of SS ones from alloyboltz.  they were a good price too.
if there were no concerns with aluminum into aluminum I would have gone with the probolt/cyclex kit.  they are a nice looking set but if there are long term concerns Id rather steer clear (this bike's a keeper   )
