Loss of power when accelerating
« on: August 14, 2013, 05:50:59 PM »
I've noticed a weird issue. When I'm accelerating at a gradual pace, not gunning it, the rate of acceleration is stationary, but the rpms continue to climb. It happens around 4.5k ~ 5k. However, if i do gun it, it seems to accelerate fine. The accelerator pump is working correctly, correct amount of 'slack' in the throttle and the carbs have recently been cleaned. I hate to think its a compression issue, but that is the only thing I could image it would be. I even tried adjusting the air mixture screw a few times without success. Has anyone had this issue with their bike?  The bike was running the best it ever has until I put new grips on. Thats the only adjustment that I had done since then. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Heres the setup:
78 cb750f supersport
pod filters
#42 idle jets
#120 main jet
air mixture screw out 2 turns
4 to 1 exhaust (not sure of the brand)

You will probably have to raise the slide needles for the pods and pipe change.

These are EPA carbs intended to have the pilot screws set for leanest mixture.  It's fine there, as long as the accell pump is working like it is supposed to, and shooting good strong shots upon throttle twist.  My CB750F had hesitation until I made the pump work as it should (which was way better than the first round of pump fixing, worked, but not near strong enough).

FYI: the pilot screws are not air mixture screws.  They regulate total premix of fuel and air in the pilot circuit that is delivered to the carb throats.  Honda calls them Idle Mixture Screws (IMS).

Adjust your clutch, it might be slipping at that point in the rpm range... ;)

Thanks guys. I'll try the clutch adjustment first before ripping down the carbs again.
