Heavy throttle from stop to moving?
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:23:28 PM »
Feel like I have to throttle it pretty heavy (half way) with clutch control to get the bike moving from stop.... So I roll the throttle and slowly let out the clutch and bike sorta crawls pretty slow until it's going about jogging pace and then I let off clutch entirely.... Is this normal?

No it is not normal. Have tried to adjust your clutch?

Clutch is perfect.... Just seems to require a decent amount of throttle to get it rolling before I can really left go of clutch

So you don't think it is slipping? Then it seems as though something has it in a bind.
Make sure it is not slipping. Put the front tire up against a big tree ( or your X wife's car) put the bike in gear 4 or 5 and try to take off as if you are at a light. If the bike does not stall out then clutch is bad. If the engine revs up and does not stall then the clutch is slipping.

Ok I'll try that test.... I'm afraid it's slipping (not really sure what slipping feels like) and if so would I just replace the clutch plates?

Try adjusting the clutch and cable and changing the oil first then get back and we can go from there.

It sounds to me like you are having engine power issues. Is that more of what you are describing...lack of power?

From a dead stop I'd say maybe... If I were to quickly hit the throttle and let go of the clutch it would either stall or jolt lightly and go right into 1st... I get the bike rolling with about half clutch and at about 3 seconds off the line I can let out the clutch completely and it sticks first gear....sorta makes a engine whine (excessive throttle to avoid stall) only happens from dead stop... Power great through gears once it's rolling

Does the bike roll easily i.e. are the brakes free?

^^ That's a good question.

Bikes with clogged pilot jets often need a lot of throttle to keep them from stalling out.

I don't think it's a clutch issue at all. Sounds like the clutch is working as it should he just is being forced to let it slip a lot longer than normal since the bike is either dragging the brakes or is lacking power.

So, at about what RPM is the bike when you release the clutch completely?  Is it dragging down or kind of holding down the RPMs as you release it?

If the engine is racing as you release the clutch, and you have to do that to get your bike moving, I'd say your clutch is slipping.

On the other hand, if releasing the clutch gradually as you are doing drags down or holds down the RPMs, then I'd say you have a power issue.  I had something like that happen to me once, turned out it was not firing as consistently as I thought.  Check your pipes in this case to see if they are all warm and roughly equally so, then look into cleaning your carbs and inspecting them.

Notice it needs longer clutch once I've been riding for 15-20 min... When it's cold it moves great with short clutch work from a stop

I'm not 100% sure, but that sounds like clutch to me then, but the stalling out thing still sounds more like low power.  Did you feel your pipes?  What sort of RPM range are you in while releasing / after releasing the clutch?

I hate to ask, but I think it would be really informative to everyone if you could make a short video of the tach and your hand on the clutch as you get it moving from a stand still.  One of the few situations I think a video is really warranted.

Having similar issues it's safe to assume that if I can change gears without clutch and blipping the throttle I've got something Illadjusted or my clutch is slipping?

I can always up shift without clutch (even though it's a good habit to use clutch with every shift).... Always need clutch downshifting  ....thinking my issue is more of a mixture thing as I remember that the bike runs richer when it warms up.... If it's a little too rich after 15-20 min if riding more throttle would be required (I believe) off the line to sorta cure the symptom I'm having but maybe I'm wrong...
