CB500 Head gasket oil leak
« on: August 11, 2013, 05:34:41 PM »
My 1973 CB500 restore is done, one problem, head gasket seeps oil externally.
The engine hasn't run since the 80's, and there was no sign of leaks until now. I'm sure the inevitable will be replacing the head gasket.
Can the head be removed with engine in frame,
also has anyone seen head gasket oil leak stop on engines that haven't been started in a long time.
At least it runs great!

Thanks dave500, I found some info that it could be done, but I really wanted to hear it from the SOHC geniuses/ gurus/ experts/ hotshot/ Maestro/  well you get it!

I had a 1974 CB750 in the mid 70's and I took the head off and I also don't remember removing the engine.
I painted the head Red and cylinder black to resemble a Dunstall 750 Norton I saw in a magazine, I wonder what happened to that bike.

thanks again, Mark

New news on the head gasket leak, It seems that the oil leak has slowed down considerable the more miles I'm putting on the bike. I have one theory that the expansion and contracting of the head/cylinders may help. Or maybe oil is clogging the pores in the gasket. Or using 140w oil works, hehehe. What ever it is, it's a MIRACLE!
Time will tell.
