With my wife we traveled to Paris last weekend.

Not for the first time, we rode to Paris in 1995.  This time she is not pregnant and also different continent. :)

The top case made it to Paris and also Paris, haha.

I got two free, yes free '83 GS1100Es, with clean titles.  The owner had worn himself out trying to fix 'carb' issues, and wanted someone who would fix and ride, not flip. One blue, ran only on choke, the other red, apart but complete. Both 20K miles and not abused, but had gone down on side covers.  Since original exhausts and air boxes were present I cleaned carbs in chem dip bucket (CA meh stuff) in my big ultrasonic replaced drilled out slides with original - he had about 8 sets of spares, put in stock jets, again had tons and tons of them - and fitted it up. Ran OK but cut out a lot in low RPM. Took carbs off and no issues/gunk so I focused on the coils, which were Chinese no-name knock offs. Sure enough fitting one of the pair of originals and putting in a relay sorted it out, it runs perfectly, like new.  Goes like stink.

I did 1000 grit on all the red bodywork since it was a bit better, and clear coated with 2K ultra, and put on the blue bike.  Painted wheels black, put Shinko 712s and Ferodo organic pads, and straight rate springs, plugging air hole. Has emulators, Out back has new adjustable Ikons. The other has original Koni type non-adjustable.  Chain converted to 530 with new sprockets. Both biks 20K or so miles and all the original stuff is good, even had tons of NOS parts like twist grips, plugs, seals, gaskets. He was chasing an oil leak and bought head gasket but it was just the usual spots on it, the tach drive seal and 'sealing nut' in the head.

The other bike is now ready for resurrection, it's all there but in boxes.

Before and after:  Imgur has changed image size, used to be easy, now I can't figure it out!

The '93 R100GS-PD has been a little neglected lately, so took a ride out to Drewsey and Juntura OR on US20.

This humble looking shack in Drewsey, OR was a destination for motorcycle rallies a couple of decades ago.  There was a good cafe, with a nice campground in the back.  The gal who owned it sold out, and later owners tried to keep it going, but that didn't happen.  Too bad.  I ate there many times.  A cool place that was a bit out in the middle of nowhere.

Pretty much leaves you with only one option-

The 93 year old Oasis Cafe in Juntura 18 miles away is a worthy replacement.  Aptly named, Juntura is like a oasis.  The food isn't bad at all.  A nice feature is each table has its own fly swatter.

A little nostalgia in the men's room -

They'd appreciate it if you don't speed through Harper -

An old farmhouse near Vale I've posted before.  One day I will go by there and find it has fallen down -

I saw a photo recently that showed old growth 2x4 from house built in 1900 compared to modern "2x4" and the growth rings of modern 2x4 were wide whereas the old growth 2x4 that used to be used was a dense tight growth ring wood, clearly a different species than the fast growing ponderosa pine used today...
So, that old house may be around for a lot of years if the climate is relatively dry there...

Doubtful, as the stem wall is falling outward on the east side of the house, and the interior is wide open to the weather.  It may be around for many years, but it will be mainly as a pile of sticks and rubble at some point.

The 'old school' rectangular/wedge nails seem to be the very strongest nails made, hardened.

I don't think nails made of titanium would make much difference with this poor old house.  It was quite a house in its day.

The old, abandoned Vale farmhouse.. looks like it must have been 50 years since it was used as a full-time dwelling.

I took the GS back into eastern Oregon again a couple of days after the Juntura ride to Eugene as the furthest point to see an ailing pal.  This time it was via US26.  US20 and 26 coincide for stretches in Idaho into Oregon, but diverge at Vale OR.  20 is to the south and 26 is to the north and parallel each other across eastern Oregon, but each has its own personality.  Both are good rides that offer opportunities for side trips, both paved and unpaved.  I was out for 3 days. Here are a few pics and a small sample of what there is to see.

Here is an old store and cafe in Brogan.  Like the one in Drewsey I mentioned, I used to stop there and eat.
Always cool and pleasant, even when 100 degrees outside.  Sadly, it too is long out of business and the building deteriorating.

Brogan had a fire scare in July with the Cow Valley fire.  I rode for miles before I got away from the burned area.  The mountains in the background are all charred.

A nice spot off of US26, with a little color in the trees -

Stopped for a break in John Day, obligatory corn dog and sugary coffee drink in the background -

Some scenery -

The Ochoco Divide campground was very pleasant.  The vault toilets don't stink, has running water, and is quiet -

Day 3 corn dog with a little healthier beverage (if you don't mind a little BPA in your water) -

I turned north out of Mount Vernon on US395.  What a great road.  I ended up returning on the Middle Fork road, which I may feature in the Interesting Roads thread.

As soon as I saw these two trees, I thought of making a black and white photo of them -

Thanks.  Yes, it is a great do-it-all bike.  The dog was a little ways down the road with a gal who was loading some hay bales on a little trailer pulled by a quad.  The dog came after me when I stopped and put on a pretty good show.  I told him he was a good dog for doing his job protecting his friend.  He appreciated that and we parted amicably.

The fender is up high like on a dirt bike.  The high fender came on the Paris-Dakar model.  The standard R100GS had a fender that hugged the front tire a lot closer and some P-D owners used to fit them, but then take them off again when they found mud would build up between the fender and tire.  The high fender has never been a problems for me.  There is a chin guard mounted behind the front tire the standard GS didn't have that catches a lot of crap.
