like most other european manufacturers bmw have engines made in china , i dont know why but that always makes me worry .

Actually, all BMW motorcycles and their engines are built in Berlin-Spandau, Germany. I visited the plant.
But that didn't do anything for reliability. The new 2015 model drops pistons left and right, just like the 2009 and 2010 model ate camshaft.  Yes, there were also problems with the transmission, but my melted front-wheel bearing could also have killed me and my kid on our last trip--before the engine seized. There are problems with quality control regarding the parts, and it might very well be that these individual parts are made in China while the engines get assembled in Berlin. It's not just the RR which is plagued with problems. BMW Motorrad has a serious problem now while the old BMWs still run strong.
My bike is a total loss because the engine costs more than the bike is worth, and the warranty only pays 80% of the repair up to its value. A new motor in Germany is about $ 12,000. I can buy the new RR using military sales for less than $ 14,000 here in Germany. But that doesn't help me. I just lost about $ 6,000--the price I have to pay out of my pocket for a new engine--despite having extended warranty. That is what happens if you actually drive these things without replacing them at least every other year. And if I sell my bike to locals, they have to pay import taxes--which is why I have not sold it before. It's impossible to sell with the mileage.

could you not source a secondhand engine ?   there must be plenty of crashed ones over there .
was told that kymco manufactured and assembled some bmw engines , by one of the goldbet mechanics . goldbet ran the official bmw racing team at that time .

The problem is this: if I get a new engine, the warranty will cover 80% of the repair up to the value of the bike--a little more than half of what the repair will cost. If I get a used engine--the warranty will pay nothing. If the warranty would pay me the money without having it repaired by BMW aka get a new engine, that is the route I would otherwise take. But they don't. I am pretty screwed.
No, the engines are really all manufactured in Berlin. But only God knows were the parts come from. And that is exactly the problem. Initially, there was a problems with the hardening process of the early cams-- I lost both. But now there are new problems with the 2015 RRs, and they keep dropping valves. Again: a batch of defective parts. There are RRs and Rs that are only three months old--and already have a new engine. All this can be read in the German RR forum. I just wrote a letter to Munich, BMW HQ. They are looking into my dreadful experience.

Wobbly, sorry to hear about your never ending trouble.  Are you considering just getting out - ie selling the BMW?

Wobbly, sorry to hear about your never ending trouble.  Are you considering just getting out - ie selling the BMW?

I am trying to--but it's difficult. You see, I am stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. In order to sell the bike to a local--which really is the only way to find a buyer--the bike has to clear German customs as if it is imported from the U.S. I have a military vehicle registration--the German plate is just a cover to prevent us from becoming a target. That means 19% VAT plus import tax for a local buyer on top of the purchase price. The bikes are otherwise identical--the U.S. specs has four additional reflectors--that's all.  You see the dilemma I am in ?
I get a great price on a new bike through military sales--but I pay as much for parts and labor as the locals do. German bikes and cars cost a fortune in Germany--and much less in the States. The new 2015 RR costs me about $ 14,000 with military sales. The new motor installed in Germany costs about $ 12,000. The Germans pay about $ 22,000 or more  for a new RR.
If I somehow get out of this, even with a ridiculous loss, I will get myself the Honda CB1100 as a second bike. At least my 77 Honda CB 750K7 doesn't let me down--not in 38 years. But I like to drive the Alps and Dolomites in the wintertime, when I have the passes to myself. Neither the CB750 nor the CB1100 are a good choice for that because of the salt. But the first RR was the only modern bike I liked. the new one is totally ugly. And, again, its engine is blowing up too.

I keep you posted.

Well hopefully BMW will get involved and try to make things right by you. If you muster the courage, might have a look at the new K13s. It's new livery here is quite good looking, and they get solid reviews here in the states.

That's a beautiful "Hog" Bill, how does it go? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

$2600? That's a bloody bargain mate, well done! I paid $6500 for my 1984 "Iron Head" Sporty in 1987, but folks here still want that much money for the same model, they don't seem to depreciate here like Japanese bikes......................... ;D

Ever since I took a new position at work in April I've been working a lot of OT. As a "treat" to myself I started looking for another old bike to play with and came across this beauty. I couldn't pay his asking price outright but he was interested in trading my K6 plus some cash. We made a deal and he delivered the bike about 3 weeks ago.

It's a 1970 BSA Royal Star 500. Has electronic ignition, new tires, rims, and seat. The motor is a replacement with a rebuilt top end. The deal also included the original motor and a few other parts. Riding it is VERY different from the CB750! With low compression pistons and shorter gearing, cruising speed is about 50 mph and she sounds mighty busy at 60 mph. But it's a ton of fun and it looks and sounds fantastic. A perfect first step into the world of classic british bikes.

I went to two wheel tuesday last night with my dad and Johnie and heard a new joke. A Finnish guy with a thick accent walks up to my bike and asks "Do you know what BSA stands for?"

"Yeah" I said, "Birmingham Small Arms"

"No" he says, "Bastard Stopped Again!"  ;D ;D ;D ;D

it is red and white mountain, eagle county, Vail Colorado, that is beaver creek ski area in the background; about 2 hours west of Denver. Not many people ever went up their. Me and my buddy scott were trail blazers on lots of it.
