Got the XS2 out last weekend. A very nice little putt around the coast.

I took the Interceptor out yesterday morning, wound up riding a few dozen miles of dirt roads around Pittsfield, NH about 50 miles from home.
I've seen this bike with stock suspension and the same Pirelli Phantoms go through nastier stuff in YouTube videos from India so I wasn't too worried about getting home.

Found a sunny flat spot to pull over for pics:

Beautiful pic Greg! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Great pics Alan, and yep, those RE650’s with “sensible” wheel/tyre sizes and wide bars are easy to ride on nice dirt roads like that, and unlike their British forebears, you won’t have to go back to retrieve all the parts that fall off! ;D

Thanks Bill & Terry. It was a bit of a chore at first and I had visions of scraped mufflers, bashed tank corners and bent levers but with a little clutch control I did better than I could have hoped. I did stall out once climbing uphill through a rocky washout that sloped off down to the right side. It was filled with fist sized rocks in mostly dry dirt & gravel, I was in 2nd gear and the situation called for 1st. I'd seen enough videos of dropped bikes on dirt roads & was paying attention to keep my right foot on the brake while leaning to the left to put my foot down after all momentum was lost. I grabbed some front brake and gently let the bike roll backwards to a spot where I'd have flatter ground on the right side to put my right foot down so I could find first gear and get going again.
It was all much easier than it looks in those videos, I guess I wasn't tired out from miles of off-roading maybe?

I'll be looking at some 70/30 or 60/40 type tires when that time comes. A little more confidence off the pavement will be nice and I understand even the chunky looking 60/40 (60% pavement/40% dirt) tires are smooth & quiet on pavement.
It's got 18's front & rear in 2.5 and 3.5 widths so there will be some availability.

Thanks Terry, it's one of my favorite forest service campgrounds, only 6 bucks with the geezer pass.  Hard to beat it.

Is that like the "seniors Card" that we get here once we turn 60 Greg? I used mine for a cheap train fare last year and for a "seniors discount" at my wife's favourite eatery, there are lots of other discounts available to oldies, but I always forget to flash my card when I buy something? ;D

It's called the "National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass."  It gets you and guests into national parks for free and discounts at federal campgrounds.  You have to make it to 62 years old to get one and it's good for life.  It cost 10 bucks when I got mine, now they are $80.  With places like Yellowstone charging $35 to get in these days, even at $80 it pays for itself fast.

Thanks Stev-o.

Here on Maui we also get what's called Kamaaina discount. Show your Hawaii drivers license and you get 10 to 20% off depending on the store. Usually eating establishments and some retail places.
The word is of course Hawaiian and refers to being a local since we have so many tourists.

Nice!!

I used to live all over the state as a kid. At one point in Merrimack. Love the state (when it’s not covered in snow haha).

I have almost picked up an interceptor many times. My XSs havnt let me down yet, that’s the only thing that’s kept me from getting one.

Built one to take on dirt roads and on the beach here. Put some shinko 241s on it and they work pretty good off road, ok in the sand and surprising well on the highway. They are pretty soft, so maybe not too long of a life but we’ll see.

We had the Interceptor out and I think it needs a new regulator rectifier. 8)

Nice. I rode my 550F along a jeep road through Monument Valley, UT in 2017 and (unintentionally) rode my 750F up a winding dirt logging road in 2019. In both cases my street tires did fine on the dry dirt and my bars were tall enough to allow me to stand while riding, which makes a huge difference.

That’s a good looking XS650 mate, I’ve got one in my garage that I bought in 2019, got running, bought lots of new parts from Mikes XS from, and then forgot about again. I see you’ve got a 750 kit in yours, did you notice much of a difference? I’m thinking about installing one, and maybe stroking it as well? I’ve got a newish Royal Enfield 650 here and you’re right, it and the Yamaha are very similar power-wise, but the RE is way smoother. ;D

Today I rode the 80' Suzuki GS 1100E for the first time. We just finished resurrecting it over the last 4 months. It was last on the road in 06'. I got a lap around the 12 mile test loop in before the rain showers showed up. 8)

Looks great mate, I see that you have Mikuni RS carbs on it, what do you think of them? I put a new set on my Kawasaki Z1-B with Moriwaki 1103cc kit, ported head, big valves, etc etc, and they didn't need any adjustment (apart from idle) and really woke it up. I'm tempted to put a set on a hotrod CB750 I'm thinking of building. ;D

Thanks buddy. So far I like them. We bought them because the stock carbs were unusable as well as the extra set we bought. The only adjustment was fine tuning the active sync and idle. Of course as soon as we finished this bike the weather turned from beautiful and sunny to cloudy with a chance of rain. I can't wait to get to know this bike better. First impression is it feels like riding a 750cc size bike until I twist the throttle then it's time to giggle in my helmet. And the Delkevic stainless exhaust system sounds freakin' awesome. ;D
