I got two free, yes free '83 GS1100Es, with clean titles. The owner had worn himself out trying to fix 'carb' issues, and wanted someone who would fix and ride, not flip. One blue, ran only on choke, the other red, apart but complete. Both 20K miles and not abused, but had gone down on side covers. Since original exhausts and air boxes were present I cleaned carbs in chem dip bucket (CA meh stuff) in my big ultrasonic replaced drilled out slides with original - he had about 8 sets of spares, put in stock jets, again had tons and tons of them - and fitted it up. Ran OK but cut out a lot in low RPM. Took carbs off and no issues/gunk so I focused on the coils, which were Chinese no-name knock offs. Sure enough fitting one of the pair of originals and putting in a relay sorted it out, it runs perfectly, like new. Goes like stink.
I did 1000 grit on all the red bodywork since it was a bit better, and clear coated with 2K ultra, and put on the blue bike. Painted wheels black, put Shinko 712s and Ferodo organic pads, and straight rate springs, plugging air hole. Has emulators, Out back has new adjustable Ikons. The other has original Koni type non-adjustable. Chain converted to 530 with new sprockets. Both biks 20K or so miles and all the original stuff is good, even had tons of NOS parts like twist grips, plugs, seals, gaskets. He was chasing an oil leak and bought head gasket but it was just the usual spots on it, the tach drive seal and 'sealing nut' in the head.
The other bike is now ready for resurrection, it's all there but in boxes.
