Best/easiest way to plug tank?
« on: August 10, 2013, 03:31:22 PM »
I'm doing the POR-15 system on my 350f tank. So far I've only rinsed it out and done the Marine Clean (Step 1). I read a lot about using duct tape, so I tried that and it didn't work very well. I was able to slosh most of it around in there for a while, but a LOT of it was leaking out through the 3 petcock holes and the gas cap hole. What's an effective method to plug the tank really well before I move on to the next 3 steps?
Also, what should my expectations be for that first step? My tank wasn't extremely bad to begin with and I could see right below the gas cap hole that it definitely was doing its job. But there is still some surface rust in there. Is it okay to move on to the next step or should I try doing it again with some Simple Green, or something (seeing as how I've used up the quart of Marine Clean)?

I made a steel plate to plug the valve hole on my tank.  Steel plate and a piece of air tube rubber held it sealed for the cleaning.

IF you can find some ALUMINUM Tape , it will seal all the holes and stick.. I've used "THE WORKS" toilet bowl cleaner with EXCELLENT results. You can buy a bottle at Walmart for 1 or2 bucks and it's enough to clean the whole tank spotless. Be ready to coat your tank as soon as you rinse with water then some alcohol because as soon as the metal dries it will start to flash rust!!

Crap, I didn't even think of flash rust! I only did the first step at my friend's shop and won't be getting back out there until Monday. I did rinse it out pretty good and then used an air compressor in it for a few minutes, just not for that long or that thoroughly. Well, hopefully it doesn't get too bad and I'll probably just re-do the first step with some Simple Green or that toilet bowl cleaner. I've heard that the 2nd step gets rid of most of the rust, anyway, and that the actual POR-15 liner requires some rust to really stick. Any other input?

Por-15 requires or works better with rust ?? A lot of the Kreme I have removed from gas tanks from failure always has a crap load of rust on the backside, stuff is like a cancer. Think I would make sure there is not any before doing the final step.

El cheapo walmart ear plugs. Last time I cleaned mine with vinegar, they held for 3 days with regular duck tape over them.

I used a vacum carb plug with a bolt inside for petcock.. A drain plug with wing nut for filler hole.

Yes, the general consensus (mind you, I haven't actually contacted a POR-15 rep) is that this stuff doesn't like bare metal or sandblasted surfaces. Based on what I've read on forums and such, as long as it's not loose, some surface rust leftover will help the final liner step to adhere. This stuff is VERY different from Kreem, from what I've read. In any case, I still have the 2nd step to do, so hopefully that gets even more of it out.

Thanks for all the replies and input on plugging.

I found out my cb750 take can use a 5/8" compression cap beautifully. It's npt, something similar may work for you as well.
