cb350 without spark
« on: August 11, 2006, 09:15:19 AM »
just bought a cb350 built 7/71 .  the bike has no spark and has been sitting for four years.  It was a running bike when put up.  It has been in a garage with a tarp on it for this long as well.
I check and clean the plugs and points and still no help.  Is there a certain thing that I should check first on this particular bike?  I mean was there certain probs with it that were common?  or do I just have to go right down the line and start checking the easy stuff first and getting eventually to the major stuff?

any help would be appreciated.

Unscrew the spark plug caps from the coil wires...trim the coil wires back about 1/4" and screw the caps back on.

Make sure you have good cooper wire to screw the caps back into.

Later,
Greg

Yes, always check the easy stuff first. Since the bike was covered up, it may also have suffered corrosion from moisture trapped under the conver at places like the ground wire and even nain fuse. I assume your main fuse has a good connection. When you have a charged up battery properly connected, do any lights work? You know, oil pressure, neutral, headlight, etc. If not, make sure you have a good fuse and the ignition switch and is on. Also, I assume if you have lights and no spark, the kill switch is not off.

here's an easy test.
Put a test light from ground to the wire on each point. turn the engine over and when the points close the light should go out. If it doesn't the points are the problem.
I had a set that looked ok but had enough oxide that they failed to conduct! I pollished them with a dremmel and a stainless wire wheel and it solved the problem.

thanks for the advice guys. the problem was a corroded main fuse next to the battery.  I cleaned it and I have nice spark.  Now to clean the carbs. grrr!

thanks for all the info.
