Cam Cover Removal ??
« on: August 13, 2013, 09:10:54 AM »
Removing (or trying to) cam cover from 550K1. I have removed all 18 bolds and screws, have removed the breather cover and end caps. Removed the tappet covers and loosened all the tappets before starting the job. The cover has lifted on the front edge about 3/16 inch but shows little to no gap at the back edge.

I also released pressure gradually and uniformly when removing the fasteners. I feel like there's upward pressure on the front edge where the gap is as the cover will not move down. I know there are one or two studs on the back edge which I suppose indexes the cover to the head. Is this what's preventing the cover from coming off?

What should I do?

Thanks

have you removed the bolts under the end cap? gentle tapping with a hide or copper mallet should loosen it

Yes, end cap bolts are out.
Forgot to mention that I also removed the tach gear from the cover.

I count 20 bolts/screw holes for the cover.

Two Tired. Service manual says remove 12 screws and six bolts. The breather cover was off prior in manual instruction, but that would add two more bolts.

Cover is off.  I put the fasteners back in then backed them out again making sure the back of the cover was lifting along with the front edge.  The one stud between 3 and four was a bit rusty so I think that was the sticking point.
