cb550 suspension what damper to get?
« on: August 12, 2013, 10:16:32 PM »
I have 76 cb550f and am looking to improve suspension over this winter

Currently bike feels terrible in corners at the posted speed and seems to want to wobble a lot.

I am planning to do this:

I also seem to have bent rim so going to try to solve by adjusting spokes to straighten it out some seem to be loose.

The problem is I want to install a steering damper and trying to figure what one to get and how I can install it (i do not want to modify anything on bike (its all stock)) so thinking I need to locate a clamping system for the frame.
I am looking for a whole damper setup for $150ish

Any help locating what to order for a damper setup or any other consideration for suspension would be greatly appreciated I am trying to get all parts together for the down time in the winter.

You should not need a damper. You need to make sure your rim is true, your tires are in good shape and properly inflated, your forks are working properly, and your headset is correctly adjusted.

In my opinion a steering damper on a stock, non-racing SOHC4 is an affectation. If you like the look by all means add one, on a cafe it can really add to the appearance, but it shouldn't be necessary for good handling at normal speeds.

I have to disagree Danny, I've run dampers on almost every bike i have ever owned and they are noticeable and do a good job. I would start by checking the steering head bearings and swing arm bushes, all wheel bearings tires and rims before adding a damper that may just mask another problem.  All the bikes I have used a damper on had perfect suspension set ups, any bike can have induced wobbles or head shakes, its a result of suspension forces finding an ideal combination causing oscillations in the front end, almost any bike can get tank slappers, a steering damper lowers the risk considerably... ;) Get everything else right then decide if you still want a damper...
