2013 “Sad old Gits” ride
Seeing it's winter here now I thought it is only fair to post up our summer road trip
After last year’s ride to the South Island the Sog’s decided this year to do the traditional ride to the CMCRR festival at Pukekohe, held at Hampton Downs this year.
The theme was Triumph. 40 years since the last win by a works triple
As usual the organisers refuse to let bikes from the Far East compete.
I would pay good money to see a Honda 6!
Of all those invited as only 3 of us did the ride, myself (1977 Honda CB750) my brother Mark (1982 Yamaha SRX600) and Michael M (BMW R80GS)
Our route as usual shunned SH1 if possible we met at the Red House Café Te Horo then we headed to Ashurst via Shannon. From Ashurst we headed to Taihape via Cheltenham, Kimbolton then over the “Peep O Day”. From Taihape we headed to Napier, over the “Gentle Annie”

We had an apartment in Hamilton as our base for the weekend, To get to Hamilton we did the Napier – Taupo then cut across to Te Awamutu via Mangakino then up to Hamiton

The return trip was Te Kuiti, Taumaranui. Ohakune Taihape,
Over lunch at Taihape we discussed a road we had spotted on the way up, It Looked like it should link up with the road to Kimbolton/Mangaweka. So began our traditional SoG “Adventure”

At Taihape a woman riding a Ducati Monster of some description ended up at the same café as us. I noticed she had an amusing sticker on her bike, A small boy urinating on the word JAPAN, very funny. Not sure what the whole of Japan had done to her but I guess she must have her reasons for wanting to wee on it.
After nearly 1500km the 750 performed faultlessly and returned an average of 36mpg, shamed by the SRX with 60mpg The R80gs got 50mpg. Looks like I have a winter project, sort out my carbs
