CB750 K1 another clutch issue
« on: August 19, 2013, 05:42:35 AM »
Rebuilt the engine, new friction and steel plates, springs.  Bike never had a sticking clutch plates like starting when cold pull clutch in put in gear bike lurches forward and stalls.  Keep level in and hit the starter and it all works as it should.  Took apart numerous times, even put a later model F2 clutch assembly in basket etc, still same problem.  Back to early model.  Done the Hondaman mod with drilling extra holes to improve oil flow.  3 hours after getting home I slacked off both ends of the clutch cable, loosened the 12mm nut and tightened my hand the adjuster bolt, got it lightly seated and backed off 1/4 of turn.  Re-adjusted cable as per books etc. Pulled clutch lever in and put in first and moved forward of centre stand, what do you know plates stuck together.  Changed up into second rocked backward and forward and it all freed up and worked as it should.  Now put back into first and let clutch out didn't go anywhere (normal), then pulled clutch in and didn't go anywhere.  Rocked again and it all loosened up and could roll the bike.  Clutch lever out and then back in and bike didn't go anywhere, had to rock to get it loose again.  Clutches are not my friend.  I have changed oil from Mobil to Castrol as I couldn't get the Mobile oil anymore, mineral oil both of them. Not sure if that has caused anything. When riding, the clutch lever is almost all the way out before the bike sort of like the friction point maybe takes up.  There is still slack in the lever 10mm. Soaked the clutch plates etc before putting them in.  Plates are not genuine Honda, got them from a place in Canada and didn't have a brand name. CB750 Supply or something else like that can't remember for sure.  Same with steel plates.  All are straight and within tolerance, plenty of meat left on the friction plates, springs are all the same and are correct length for early model.  Not sure what else to do.

You are not doing anything wrong.
You just need to get out and drive it.

These older bikes were just that way.

You just need to get out and ride it. It will smooth out.
I know because I was a Honda mechanic in those days.
