Installing coils after frame was powder coated???
« on: August 10, 2013, 04:27:23 AM »
I have a chopper i am building and the frame was powder coated, the coils mount up front on a flat bar so they are held there by a nut and bolt the coils are not installed by a  bolt that threads into the frame.I just bought electronic ignition for it and was wanting to know if before i mount the coils onto the plate do i need to remove the powder coat? I did remove all the paint where the motor cases will touch the frame for a good ground. Thanks

I would at least remove paint in the area where the nut for the mount bolt will contact the frame... Are these STOCK coils or others??? You can fab a ground wire with lugs on each end and just attach one end under the mount bolt and run the wire along the frame to some hidden point so you won't have to remove some PC.

Stock Honda coils do not require a ground. Don't know what you have so look up the manufacture and ask them.

As Black said no ground necessary. The ground that is on stock coil hangers is just a regular chassis ground not the coil ground. The spark at your plugs is your ground

I have stock coils and just got the Pamco ign. so no need to remove paint as the plugs act as my ground with either points or the pamco .right? Thanks

You still need to remove paint or powdercoat under the coils for the green harness ground.

There was spot on the rear coil mount where the frame was not originally painted. Just scrape the powder coat off there.

FWIW, I had a big problem with erratic firing on my CB350 twin. As somebody mentioned, the coil doesn't need the ground, but the CB350 has the condensors mounted on the coil bracket and they do need ground. Until I wire wheeled the paint where the coil bracket contacts the frame the engine didn't get past 3k rpm. Don't know if your bike is the same but just FYI.

Yeah you can switch them it doesn't matter BC they fire at the same time. Not the same as a car
