Cam tensioner screw no longer moves
« on: August 15, 2013, 04:40:59 PM »
I'm struggling to get the cam back in. I got the cam in, chain on the sprocket, but sprocket wouldn't go on the shaft. I thought that my tensioner had slipped and I needed to lock it back in all-the-way-loose. However, now the tensioner won't turn in either direction (with the nut completely loose.

What do I do?

Put the nut back on the adjuster stud, but only at the very end.  Use the nut to tap the stud into the cylinder block about 1/16 inch.  That should release the tensioner clamp and allow the stud to activate the tensioner position inside when turned.  It doesn't turn very much to do this.  Less than a turn, about 1/2 turn, if I recall.

I'm wondering if  there's something similar to this that I can do with a CB650 cam chain tensioner?

I've adjusted it three times per the manual and still have too much cam chain noise. What if I took off the acorn style lock nut on the CB650? What will I see? Will I be able to do a similar procedure to make sure my adjuster is free?

Back the nut off a few turns but not all the way; been there done that. The clip on the tensioner that holds the adjuster bolt in place is soft and bends, which allows the bolt to get knocked in too far then you have to pull the tensioner out of the the engine.  At least on the cb650 units. I don't know about other engines. Sorry for adding to the hijack.

I had the nut backed way off. What actually happened for me was that I tightened it down and something popped back into place. However, in my case, it was working perfectly and then stopped working somehow. So YMMV.
