Any Deep Purple fans?
« on: August 18, 2013, 02:13:05 PM »
Can anyone help?
Here is a request for an explanation of the lyrics in one of their songs, It's from a friend in Finland who is not sure of his own translation from English.

Copy and pasted from his post to me on Facebook.

Hans Trapped
Hello Sam. Now I have very serious question  . Deep purple has this song "sometimes i feel like screaming". OK. There is sentence (side door jhonny) what does it mean? I take it as drug dealer, my work pal say, it means somethigelse, but what? U know English, so whats is the answer?  I'm sorry for spelling errors.

from song meanings.com:

...believe the song is about two lovers who were in some town spending night in the hotel but then she left and wrote a message and a number possibly somewhere where there are spanish maids? He is trapped in that town and their memories. He sleeps in the same room and remembers her all the time. He tries to escape but best the plans come apart at the seams and shatter all his dreams.

Well I'm a speed king............. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I think that songs is from the "Purpendicular" album. The opening tune is called "Ted the mechanic" and I recall having read, either in the album booklet or in the "Live in Australia" booklet that "Ted" was one of the band roadies.

I mean, the explanation to that song may be in one of the booklets. Unfortunately, I have all my CD's away in storage room as I listen to mp3 only since some years ago... does somebody have the booklet at hand?

I have just read the lyrics and my first instinct is they are referring to prostitutes (back street dolls) and the side door Johnie's (the wide eyed boys with their bags full of money) suggests they are rent boys. (Back in the alley going bang to the wall) sort of re-enforces the theory.

That sort of thing would makes a boy's eyes wide, methinks........ ;D

SAM, Side door Johnny's is a reference to a woman or man that is infatuated with one or more theatrical actor/actresses ( band members )  and who routinely  hangs around the theaters/ concert halls in order to meet and and form relationships with the actors/ band members of their affections. Bottom line...... GROUPIES.    ;)  8)

 P.S.  Another old phrase is " Stage door johnny's ".   ;)

Hi Blue,
Sounds an authoritative enough assertion, mine was only a theory, I stand down and bow.
