I believe that the stock color was semi-gloss black, if that's what you're going for.  Really a matter of personal opinion though.  Are you going for a resto, or a custom?   What do you think will look better for your particular application?  In my opinion, for what it's worth, I like the look matte finished frames.  However, glossy frames are easier to clean.

Neither, semi-gloss. See the pics about half way down the page: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=117164.25

Have them semi-gloss clear over the black for extra protection and appearance.

Your 750 K6 originally used Honda black paint code: NH1 on the frame, swingarm, chain guard, oil tank, kickstand, center stand and lower triple tree which has a gloss factor. This NH1 gloss factor tends to fade out over time when exposed to light and then becomes subjective. I would suggest using the front of the oil tank as the original factory paint has been protected/preserved by the side cover. This is usually the best sample to match up when going for originality.

I got mine powder coated in satin:

As for gloss, check out SohRon's opinion on his gloss black powder coat in his thread

Quote
then powder coated gloss black, and I'm not sure I'd do the high gloss again; at least not in a dark color. The black powder coat is so glossy and fragile that it required a special clear overcoat (at extra cost) to protect the finish. The problem is that the overcoat is kind of fragile itself, and shows every fingerprint and micro scratch. There are areas in the finish that are a Little cloudy now from attempts to clean off fingerprints. Even Microfiber cloths can scratch the finish. I'm thinking that eventually I'll have the frame redone, but have it coated with the semigloss finish which is still pretty shiny, but a little more forgiving. Still, it does look nice

YMMV

I have mine in satin and wish I'd gone with gloss. It does always look dirty.

It is a trick question and it is all in how the powder coaters present you your choices.
If you say "gloss" they might charge you more because they have to put clear over it.

If you say I would like it shiny but not "high gloss" Then it will be glossy but not high gloss. They just will not spray it with clear.

You save money because they only spray it once and bake it once.

They sell spray cans now with a product to make you powder coat shine.

My CB750 frame is recently painted in black 2k. Not gloss and not matte. Gloss grade 50 if I remember correct.
The painter recommended this and it looks good. Easier to repair if scratched.

Hi Dream750,

I am restoring a F2 and I am struggling to identify the type of black that went on the engine.

Would you have any info on that?

Thanks

750f2 and f3 frames were gloss finish from factory, (says my three examples).

I only have an F2 and an F3 engine.  Neither are as glossy as the frames, which polish up quite shinny.  Pretty sure it's different paint than what is on the frames.  Much thinner application, too, which you'd expect from a heat radiating surface.  Don't want a barrier for heat transfer between engine to air.

From the pics I've seen of the bike in their heyday, the engines were as shinny as the K model aluminum paints on that engine.  Black just isn't as reflective without some glare to set it off.

Thanks, matching that black paint on the engine has been hard so far. I will do some more research.

If you are going to use paint (cheaper and easier to touch up), somewhere in this forum I read about Rustoleum appliance epoxy paint for the frame, black of course. I have used it on two frames thus far, I get compliments on how close to original they look.
