CB750 F2 Restoration - Engine and frame paint help
« on: September 12, 2017, 08:36:50 AM »
Hi All,

I am restoring my F2 which I bought from the first owner a couple of years ago.

I am having a hard time matching the black paint for the engine, frame, calipers, forks and so on. It seems that people have no consensus on what type of black to use. I have been told many times to use satin but satin is not even close to the black used for the engine and frame.

It seems the black used by Honda is a lower gloss but still glossy black.

Does anyone know what paint I can use to replicate the original black on the engine, frame, calipers and so on?

And were there more types of black or are they all the same black?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

VHT in my opinion makes a satin black engine enamel that is very close to factory.  So does DupliColor, but it's not as gas resistant.  I would go with powder coating for the frame.  SO much easier then prepping it for paint.  But if you do paint the frame go with a single stage urethane.  It's about as good/durable as you can get with paint.  There are special caliper paints also available in spray cans that work really well, too.

Its all in the prep.  I spend countless hours with paint stripper, wire wheel, and acetone.  then baked the finished product.....but gas spills and drips do nothing to it.

I too am a fan of VHT.  I use it without primer and have been happy with the results.

I haven't used the satin enamel but have used vht case paint satin which I  is epoxy and it is way too far from the original black of the engine which has a gloss to it.

Harbour Freight sells a satin black frame paint that I used on my project bike and to touch up my rider. I am really happy with how it looks.

Is the VHT engine enamel resistant to brake cleaner? I wash my dog, clean the dishes, gargle, etc. with brake clean, and would want the paint to stand up to it...

Unless the paint is self catalysing, like a two part epoxy, an out gassing paint gets harder and more resistant to solvents the longer it has to outgas (dry).  Think months.
But, there is usually some chemical that will attack any paint.

Personally, I think your brake kleen resistant paints will have to be 2 part epoxy types, which have uv sensitivities.
I also find such demands for brake kleen resistance a bit unrealistic, as they can change their formulation on a whim.  Kinda why they offer it by brand name, rather than chemical name.

Here is my attempt at matching the original sheen of black on the F2 engine.

From left to right:
- Dupli-color low gloss engine enamel
- VHT satin black calliper paint
- VHT gloss black calliper paint
- VHT case paint which supposedly is satin but looks matte

The original F2 engine paint looks thick and has a dull gloss to it but it's not satin. It's the same paint used on the callipers.

Able to try the high gloss VHT as a test?  I had the same challenge when I repainted my engine.  Mine is too satin currently.  Curious how the high gloss VHT engine paint compares.

Ok... good.  In the end we have to be happy.  I've done some thing in an effort to expedite a project and have regretted it.  So i agree, if its not right... Don't do it.  Keep us updated on the results.  🤙
