Rebuilding Carbs CB550 F super sport
« on: August 19, 2013, 10:30:23 AM »
I am new to the forums and I am in the middle of restoring/modifying my cb550.
I have broke down, dipped and cleaned my carbs and getting ready to buy a rebuild kit. My understanding is since I have decided to use an air filter pod set I may have to install larger jets. Is this true, and can anyone give some advise on what to keep in mind while rebuilding these carbs and what kit to actually buy.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

all these carbs needed are just replace the rubber pieces, 24 orings total, then all the brass bits you just get them to fit your need.

Yes, you will need to rejet, and even then the 500/550's can be a real pain in the ass to get right with pods. Plenty of people manage to find a liveable tune, but if you are retaining the side covers there is no good reason to switch to pods, they aren't that visible and they don't provide any performance benefit, and can in fact hurt performance.

But if you still want to do it then search pods 550 in the search bar in the upper right corner, you should find many posts where people discuss the jets sizes on their bikes.

Bankerdanny,
You bring up a very valid point, I am keeping the side covers so I guess there's no need to use pods. Just thought it might look cool if I decided to do away with the side covers. That being said, do you know where I can find the original air  box and filter by chance.

thanks,

Ah, and there is the challenge. There have been a couple on eBay recently. I would also put an add in the 'wanted' section of the board. You might get one from someone that is building a cafe with an open triangle, or who has a parts bike.

I believe that the box from the 74-76 550K will fit your bike. I know I plan to use one from a '75 550K myself, but I haven't installed it yet to confirm the fit.
