Where do you guys buy ammo these days ?
« on: August 19, 2013, 11:04:18 AM »
Title says it all.   Gun range ?    I drove around town for an hour last week looking for some .22 long rifle shells and some run of the mill 9mm ammo for target practice.    Noboby has anything.   wally world, Academy, nobody...
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Is there anything more fun than riding? They are between your legs and are quiet when you turn them off.

Ammo is a #$%* to find and prices are stupid high.
Pricing is starting to come down a little and availability is better then it was 6 months ago but it still sucks.
Online stores where you had 20-30 different 9mm choices are lucky to find 2-3 choices.  Local shops are hit and miss to have anything at all.
People have been hording whatever they can find.

It depends.  I have a stash of .22, don't shoot it much, typically buy in Walmart.

For centerfires I buy components from a friend who is FFL and assemble my own - 270WSM, 303 British, 30-30 for my son, 45-70, 357/38.

For my new 44 I tried something new and cast my own bullets and shoot even cheaper.

For the little Ruger .380 I buy ammo from the FFL guy, prefer not to CCW handloads.

At the local liquor/gun/cigs triplex, being a Texan I am sure you have a few of these nearby.

People have been hording whatever they can find.
You must mean the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  They bought 1.5 Billion rounds in 2012, and plan another 1.6 billion round purchases over the next 4 or 5 years.

...or until Obama isn't president anymore.

Ammo makers who are filling big contracts, don't have time to make ammo for the common consumer market.

Some are saying this is a backdoor gun control effort by the current administration.

Go down to DFW and you can buy it on the street corner!!
You may just have to make a day trip to BIG D .
Here in NC we have PLENTY of gun stores to get ammo. I buy 9x18 ammo for about 10$ for 50 shells.

I love how they limit you to buy 1-3 box maximum of 9mm ammo here.... I go to Cabela's but it's like finding a really clean early Honda CB750 for sale... There is a site that tracks when Walmart get their shipments in....

Last time I went to Cabela's I loaded up on my max amount to buy, then had my dad and brother come to buy their max for me.... Then I was trading ammo outside of the store.. Some guy wanted .22 ammo and I was there for only 9mm.. I ended up spending #$%*, I think 350 bucks.....

The NSA thanks you for your information of where you hoard your ammo.  :)

I talked to a custom 45 auto  gun maker last week, he is two years behind on his orders. He couldn't come to our car show because if he makes his employees work over he does too, said it's only fair.

Guys, if you can fix a motorcycle, you can make your own ammo. It is fun and very satisfying and relaxing process.

Can't say you save money, generally reloaders shoot more than people who buy ammo, but your cost is much lower. I can shoot 100 rounds of 44 magnum for $10 or so - depends how much I buy lead for.

I got into it when husejn was  first elected, it was obvious there will be ammo shortage.

I agree. Reloaded many a shotgun shell for skeet and trap to improve my wing shooting for duck, woodcock and partridge. Not sure of the extent to which it paid off.  ;D

it's dismal here in OH - there's a standing line at all the retail stores for ammo, and most of the shooting ranges around me only let you buy ammo to shoot on the range because they can't get any.

i just *knew* i should have stopped somewhere for ammo when i was driving back from Fla. a couple weeks ago :/

I got into reloading some years ago for hunting purposes only. I hand load  30/06 , 243, 250 Savage. Three of us 30/06, one uses 243 and I use the 250. I still have had a hell of a time finding components. Powder , brass , bullets, and primers were the worst. Sure would nice to get a thread for info on ammo, or components. I'm sure the hunters on this forum would sell or trade to get what they need. Just a thought.

Even bullet moulds are hard to come by. I bought mould for 30-30 at Amazon and it was 6 weeks delivery time. It came after 4 weeks but still.

Looks like the ammo makers took a page from the gasoline makers' playbook. Invent a "shortage" and raise prices.

The best option is to buy online,  but that only works out if you buy in large qty,  like  500 or 1000 because shipping can be expensive on smaller qty.   Gun shows are usually an excellent bet,  but you will need to be there early because everyone else is looking for ammo also.

Your absolute best option is to learn to relaod your 9mm.  It's way way cheaper.  it's not difficult  or all that time consuming.   A Lee brand setup will be cheap ($80) to get started and once you have the basic tools,  you can load just about any additional calibers for the cost of dies ($30).
