I recently picked up a 1975 CB400f and am very excited as I have been wanting one of these for some time. Last registered in 1976 it has not been on the road for some time.  I checked the oil and it looks clean which is good.  Engine is not stuck.  Carbs and tank heavy vanish.

I will have the fuel system to the point where I can test fire soon and would like to bypass the right hand control as the PO cut the wires and tossed it.  He left long wires.

Want to get power to the coils and get the start button working.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand your question? You want to know how to bypass RH controls, ie kill switch and starter to test the bike?

I've bypassed the started on my 75 400f as the start button disintegrated.  There are good color coded wiring diagrams on this site and online.

Please let me know how I can help you.

Yeah that is basically it.  Want to start the bike and don't have a right hand control to do it.  Any way to start it without having to pay for the control in advance would be good.

Well, you can hop down to your local Harbor Freight Tools (if you have one) and buy a remote starter for your car and attach it to the solenoid to see if it will cause the starter to turn over when you press the button. The kill switch wiring, don't recall if the off position grounds the coil or the run position allows it to connect, I think the former. If so, as long as those wires aren't connected you should be good to go.
The cruder method is to take a wrench or screwdriver you don't mind some arcing marks on and short across the solenoid terminals with the ignition on...
A section of 12 ga or 10 ga house wire could do the same thing...just don't get your fingers in the way to prevent electrical burns as you are going to be doing a little "welding" if not careful.

You can use right hand controls from other bikes that have 7/8" handlebars (most do) if you wish to change both sets to have the housing match, or don't mind a mismatch. The GL500 or CX500 handlebar controls work fine and are inexpensive on ebay...

Thanks much appreciated.  Do you have a color coded 400f diagram.  Not sure if it is the same setup as 750s or not.

All Hondas used the same basic color code.  Use the kick start until you get a switch(new ones are about 100), until then all you need to do is hook a black wire to the black/white at the coils...Larry

So I was all excited that I got my new after market ignition to try and do a test fire and the igntion switch was not good.

Looking at the simplfied wirinng diagram http://www.sohc4.net/cb750-tech-guides/indexphp/cb750-simplified-wiring-diagram it appears that the coils are connected the A postion on the start switch.  I am assuming that just means on.

So without the igntion switch I should be able to power the coils by jumping a wire directly from the + on the battery and get the coils to make spark?  This should be correct since the blue and yellow points wires ground the coils releasing the spark from the coils into the plugs.

Am I right to think this?  I have seen people on youtube.com test engines with just coils.

To make sure the bike fires that will work.  To the black/white wires connect a jumper...Larry

Re: RE: CB400f test coils spark 2,3 !!
« Reply #10 on: September 22, 2013, 03:39:07 PM »
Thanks for the help with this.  I really enjoyed learning something new today.  I got spark on 2,3 just by hooking the battery to ground and getting power to the coils and other systems by splicing black and black/white wires together and hooking to the positive on the battery.

Not sure what the deal is with 1,4.  May need to reset the point gap, static time, or test coils.  Did not get that far, but am very happy I just got spark without a control.

The best part is I have been wanting to learn how to test fire an engine for some time and now I know how.   ;D

Thanks guys!

1and 4 without spark may be as simple as dirty points(that would prevent the ground necessary for spark)...Larry

They are pretty badly pitted and not making good contact.  Can I use cb750 points?  I am assuming they are all the same stuff right?

She lives!  First time this bike has been fired since 1976 at least that is when it was registered last.  Sounds good too!  Just kicked it over with a shot of ether in each cylinder and she ran for a few seconds before sputtering out.

I am stoked!

 8) 8). Nothing wrong with using an emery board to file the points until you get a new set.  Use some contact cleaner while filing and then air to blow out the residue.  Good feeling, isn't it?...Larry

Feels really good!  Have wanted a 400f for some time and this thing looks beyond rough.  All the paint on the engine and chrome is pitted and flaking, but I got a feeling she is a runner.  Only 10,300 miles or so.

Next step is to get a working brake and right hand controls and go for a quick spin to see what I really got.
