So, I think I broke it (k7 carb problems)
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:26:38 AM »
Picked up my first bike yesterday, got it home and wanted to address the small fuel leak coming out of the #2 or #3 carb. Pulled the float needles and cleaned them, reinstalled the carbs and the leak was gone! At this point I'm ecstatic, then I hear the flood gates open. Out of cylinder 3's breather tube off the carb comes a steady stream of fuel! My heart sinks like I'm expecting the float did.

My question is this: did I just dislodge the float when installing the carbs or is there something I missed/messed up? As soon as I turn the petcock on it flows out of that little tube.

You might need new float valves.

You might have a cracked overflow tube in the bowl.

The drain screw could be loose, corroded.

Float setting could be wrong.

I could go on but start with that.

Probably, most likely float stuck.  Hit/tap gently on the carbs rack

+1
Rubber mallet or block of wood to 'bump' the ends of the carb rack as you turn on fuel.
should free them.
now...ensure your tank is spotless so your float valves dont stick open and you're golden.

Float upside down? Wouldn't be the first one.

Thanks, I'll give the bowl a light tap tonight and get back to you! Anyone know where I can get the screw set to replace the screws that hold the bowls in place? The PO stripped almost all of them. Also, the breather for the #1 cylinder barn is broken off, know of any tricks to get it out?

stripped the heads, or the threads?

if its just the heads, they're pretty standard metrics, so take them to a hardware store.
(and they dont need to be that tight if you've got good orings  ;) )
if its the threads,  you've got some work to do  ;D

^^^ haha flybox1, I'll take a stripped out float bowl thread over a stripped out keyhole top thread. Although its easy to tap a new thread into either, iirc an 8/32 imperial tap is just big enough to tap out the 4 or 5 mm stock thread with no need to drill out the old thread. Thank god aluminum is easy to tap out, don't ask me how I know this lol.

Man, gasket kits and new float needles are expensive! Local supplier wants $25 a needle and $20 for the gasket kit each!
