Proto has family in Deming, within spitting distance of Silver City. ;)

Scott: is he interested in a handoff?  Would be a good place to do this as I do not think I am going to get close to Texas on this ride (will in 2016 when I do Route 66 but that is a long time off!)  Can meet up with people anywhere in NM or AZ or even southern CO

I bet Proto is interested, but he lives in CO and we need zilla to continue east.
Will PM Justin now and see is he can commit to a handoff in April.
How long [days] is your trip, Lisa?  Lucky you!

I have it planned for 12 days from start to finish but luckily I can come back to work late if need be and stretch it out.  But generally after 10 days riding I have had about enough so am more than happy to return home.  Haven't figured out the total number of miles this one will be but figure it may end up at around the 3,000 mile mark.  Hope Dash is up for it.  He did so well through Canada (which ended up being 4000+ miles) so I am hoping he will not let me down again  :-*
Let me know what Justin says and we can work it out.  I can meet him in NM if he tells me what is convenient.

Coming back into Northern AZ from 4 corners monument planning to stay off of major slabs as well (grand canyon and then some of the lesser congested roads is my plan).
Does anyone know nice roads to get back to CA without riding 40 or 10 for too long?

You can get from the Grand Canyon to Joshua Tree, CA with almost zero interstate miles. ;)

I looked at that road and read it was a great motorcycling road.  My only concern is that it takes me north when I want to be south.  May just ride it north then over to NM and go South/east to Silver City- then east toward Truth or Consequences.  Seems I have some time to spare if I do that.  Planning gets crazy making because you can't do everything you want in one visit to any particular state...ha ha

Yep, sometimes a road doesn't go where you need it to, so you file it away for another day.

Let me know if I can help as I'm travelling through this summer, mid July to mid August. Route is very approximate, diversions are certain.

Looks like the final traverse across the Northern states (loose route shown in GREEN) is the closest overlap, but that might be Sept/Oct. Stay tuned, you might end up crossing paths!

As another option, maybe the route shown in blue? Travelling up the East coast, turning back West and staying North for the East to West traverse over the summer, with the final West to East traverse taking a more central track into the fall finishing at Barber's?

Hi, this is Justin from Texas.
Proto, will you please join us in on our discussion of the 2014 relay:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=126750.125
Proto has carried NM for two years running, traveling across the state both east and west!  Proto, do you want to take the handoff in Deming and head east, meeting me (jcarthel), somewhere in western NM, maybe Hobbs, Clovis, Tucumcari, or Clayton? Want to ride east with me towards Austin for the central Texas yearly ride?  Justin

Proto here, the invisible NM rider from the last two relays!!

Sorry not to have weighed in earlier but I have been "off the air" for a couple of weeks.  My parents are not "on the web"!  Got Jcarthels PM on the way home today on my phone and I am definitely IN for a meet in NM anytime, anyplace.  I can get it over to Justin also without any problem.

Mooshie, no need to meet in Deming, I can head up or down anywhere to meet you.  The ride to Deming from any direction is BORING!!!! If roads are clear, I may ride down from up here in CO like I did last year.  Otherwise I will trailer the bike to Deming and ride from there.

Also, I just drove home via Highway 180 (Silver City) to 191 in AZ and it was beautiful.  I would stay off of I-25 at all costs, straight and uninteresting.  If you make it to Santa Fe by whatever route, go north to Chama (Hwy 84) and west on Highway 64 to Four Corners.  2CBs and I took that route last year and it is one heck of a ride!

Justin, I might follow you over and meet the TX contingent depending on the dates for the NM turkey hunt.  Got a couple of people I have to take out this year, so it will dictate whether I can continue with you east.

Glad to help with NM again!

Hi Proto:
Thanks for the info.  My mom is in the hospital and I am flying out to FL on wednesday the 19th.  Still planning on leaving at end of March but will have to see. If I have to postpone it will only be by a week or two.   Rough plans are to go through Silver City NM on 180 and then over to Truth or Consequences up toward Sante Fe.  From Sante Fe taking 84>64 to 4 corners then back into AZ.  We can meet at any of those places or in between.  I am not making hotel reservations as I will just get a place when I feel like stopping (and then I can also go on other roads as I want).
So you are in CO I take it?
Where do you suggest for a handoff?
I also have to firm up plans with Matt for the ride from CA into AZ so plan on doing that when I return from FL on 3/3/14.  Can't wait for this to happen!

Yeah, my home base is in Northwest Colorado, but the folks live down in Deming, NM so I am back and forth frequently.  Being retired frees me up to travel when I want (pending permission from wife!).  As far as the meet locations, it will depend on when you are going to be in a particular area. Once you get the NM portion of your ride more or less figured out, we can set up a meet location.

Travel suggestion:  Silver City to Gila Cliff Dwellings via Highway 15.  This route is nothing but twisty road all the way.  Gas up before leaving Silver.  MIGHT be able to get fuel at Doc Cambells trading post near Dwellings, not sure now.  On way back, turn east on Hwy 35.  This will take you past Lake Roberts, MIGHT be fuel at the store.  Continue on east towards Hwy 152.  Just short of the intersection there used to be a big store/cafe that sold gas.  Out of business on my last motorcycle ride by there, but it looked like it was under renovation on a recent non-motorcycle trip.  Tiny store in Mimbres, NM used to sell gas too, but not sure now.  A lot of these old "Ma and Pa" stations have gone under.  Hwy 152 east will take you to I-25 and about 2o miles south of T or C, NM.

In short, you are in the wilds of NM!  I now take a gallon gas can with me just to make the ride more enjoyable and not have to worry about running out of fuel.  Gas up on that stretch whenever you find a station open!  You can always discard the cheap fuel container later when you hit civilization again.  This route is well worth the trouble when on a motorcycle.

Is the Florida (southeast) leg going to start in March also? I have the week before bike week off…last year the FL leg started in Daytona. I am already planning to ride up to Amelia Island for the Concourse event, New Smyrna Beach, Ocala, Daytona, and possibly St. Augustine. Bike is running great, so far. :) Trying to get a second week off during bike week also. (for the New Smyrna event- Surf City Rumble.)

No. We've been alternating East then West coast start each year and this year is West coast start. Doesn't mean we can't organize a ride for bike week though! Maybe start a thread in the Southeast regional section:

I should be able to ride along for a portion of your travels.  8)

Hi Steve...can't argue with those words.  Nothing more devastating than hindsight.  Looks like all is well with her so I am planning to ride as originally intended at the end of March and will meet up with Proto for the hand off somewhere in NM.  Now if I can only track down FattMatt and pimpzilla ;)
Have a safe flight out there and sorry you have to go through that... I don't know which is worse.

Glad to hear your mom's doing well Lisa. Ken and I are totally looking forward to this trip. I have several friends interested in riding along as far as Big Sur or so from the Bay Area on the first day. Anyone else out there?

Well gentleman it seems as if I am going to have to bow out of the 2014 run. I have to go back to FL at the end of this month (mom is okay but I need to be there as she is having surgery).  I will have to turn Pimpzilla and the start over 100% to Matt.  :-\ If things change and I can jump in I definitely will.  Ride safe and I will pick it up again for the CA Central Coast in 2015 :-*

Sorry we're gonna miss you this year, Lisa. Ken and I'll get it kicked off though. Hmmmm. We might have to revise our plan to spend a couple days skateboarding in the Salton Sea/Palm Springs area and put a few more miles under our belts. I need to reread some of these posts and figure out a hand-off.
So much to do, so little time.
