I'm only an hour from Calais, so with enough notice I should be able to make a trip down. I would just want to make sure I could do a handoff to someone close by, either in Maine, New Brunswick or Nova Scotia... no big trips for me with a small baby at home! If people want PZ to stay state-side for more of New England, I'd be down with that, too.

Would this be PZ's first trip to Canada this rally?

Um... yeah... I was hoping to participate as well.

I actually have notifications on this thread to my cell phone, and have been keeping an eye to see when it comes close to PA.

Definitely an impressive ride Madmtmmotors, and I understand the desire to get GZ moving, but I think there should have been more posts here communicating the status.

I hope I'm not coming across as a complainer, just stating my opinion.  Getting people organized and coordinated to move GZ is clearly challenging.  I think we need to come up with a better system for next year... I'll try to brainstorm some ideas.

I felt the same way a few months ago when this year's rally began.  So far this year, it seems like there are fewer riders, traveling farther distances, with longer periods of downtime in between, and less communication regarding the planning and status of GZ's next move.  This can be frustrating for folks who want to participate, but who need time to plan.  Finding out after-the-fact that they've missed their opportunity to participate isn't cool at all.

What is causing this?  Is it the need to keep GZ moving through certain places at certain times, according to a book-ended schedule?  If so, this will always exclude folks who could otherwise participate, and I would think that maximizing participation should be more important than anything (everything) else.

My suggestion would be to create an open-ended rally, where GZ is passed from one SOHC4 owner to anther, moving along as the next closest rider's schedule can accommodate, without the need to adhere to any set schedules.  I appreciate that many states experience a season where riding is not feasible, and that of course should be considered.  Perhaps regions of the country can be focused on when the weather is agreeable, like New England in the summer or California in the winter.  This format could keep GZ moving all year-round, with a new log book started each January 1st.  I believe participation would be much greater, and it could become a challenge for all of us to see how many SOHC4 owners could take a turn carrying GZ in any given calendar year.  Riding the most miles is impressive to be sure, but the downside is the number of riders that missed out on the adventure.

Food for thought...

Dave, good suggestion - definitely a good idea worth considering.

It's interesting, because I was actually thinking of almost the opposite idea (but I do like your idea also).

I was thinking the issue was because we didn't have a defined timeline or other objectives to allow participants to plan ahead... and also to help motivate people to get GZ to a certain location by a certain date.

For instance.  It's easy for me to take off work a few days (or even the week) if I know about in advanced.  So if I new GZ was going to be at the xyz pub in Lancaster Pa on July19th for a hand-off, a month or more in advance, I could easily plan to be there.  Not knowing when GZ will be passing through means I don't plan any days off from work (or family) and my ability to participate drops significantly.  Also, I think if we mapped out dates/locations ahead of time it would also help motivate members to participate (i.e. GZ must make it to XYZ in 3 days!)

We could try to cordinate the route with events (i.e. GZ must make it to Mid-Ohio).
Of course, all this takes planning, and it requires more of us to step up and help organize.

I think Dave's suggestion could also work.  Basically change the relay from a "how many states in a year" to "how many members can be included" - I think this would basically mean it would no longer be an annual event, but rather a never ending relay that zig-zagged where ever - which is kind of a cool idea.

But, what we have now is somewhere in-between the two concepts and it doesn't seem to work.  GZ doesn't "has to be" anywhere specific in the near future, so most transitions are when someone gets the time.  Which is OK if we're just trying to hand it to the next closest guy, but causing to much of a delay if we're still trying to hit all the states in one year.

Sometimes you need to be proactive, just looking for notifications doesn't always work. Last year I was PM'ing a bunch of people in the NE to help keep GZ moving to us in Michigan.

That said, the people who have GZ need to post their timing and direction of motion and check the list of names at the beginning of the thread to know who in their general area expressed interest and send PM's to see if they are still in (sadly many people who said yes in Jan/Feb can't in June/July/August).

If you want to see how it can work, look no farther than the 2011 relay. You will notice that relay had an individual who devoted a lot of time and energy to organize routes and meetings. (Who also did a #$%*load of riding to fill in the blanks.) there were also more people motivated to make it work. That energy just hasn't been there on subsequent relays, though 2012 started out well.

Agreed.

This relay is a great event, but we all need to me more proactive and help out with organizing routes if this is going to continue to be a success.... including myself.

I didn't participate in the 2011 relay, but I did the leg between NY and PA (and into VA with Prokop) in the 2012 relay.
I think the 2011 relay had a big advantage being the first one (I read that some members thought it was only a one-time event) and therefore a lot more excitement behind it.

I think we can bring the excitement back!...  seriously, this is too cool of an event not to.

I don't want to be an armchair quarterback, either.
I would like to hear from those who've started and kept this relay going (despite declining participation).... actually I'm not 100% sure who's who regarding that.  I want to say Scottly, Madmtnmotors, Jerry Rxman Griffin?

What are your thoughts guys?  I'm willing to step-up and help out more.

I mean, I can put GZ in the mail and ship him back down if you guys want to steer him back on course.  But IMO, it felt wrong to me having him riding in a chevy....nevermind in a box! haha.  There have to be some people near enough to get him started back in that direction.  I don't think anyone who wants to participate should be skipped or miss out!

Side note: I'm currently racing my Honda every weekend locally (which is why I was in VA with Jon), so I'll need at least a day's notice to swap sprockets, etc. to travel the highway to meet up with someone.

Let me know what you guys want to do.

There are no current planners/organizers, that is why you need to step up to the plate and plan the part of the relay you want to ride.

Who can ale the handoff in Maine from Blitz??

Hey Adam,

Yeah, I don't think we should be shipping GZ if we can avoid it... just doesn't seem right.

My suggestion for now is PM the nearest members who signed up and ask them when they can ride and what direction they want to go in.  In the meantime, I'll see if I can ping the members around this area what their thoughts are about revisiting the mid-Atlantic / eastern corridor.

Where are you racing?  Do you race with USCRA?
I just starting racing with AHRMA last year. I have the same problem, since I don't have a dedicated race bike yet I had to convert my street bike.  I currently don't have a center stand, side stand, license plate, or any lights whatsoever (brake, headlight, blinkers)... I need a day or two to convert back to legal/safe street mode.

I just came back from the race at Grattan in Michigan and I'm planning on participating in the race at the New Jersey Motorsports park on July 11th-13th.  I think the NJ event is going to have a pretty good turnout.  There were a lot of bikes there last year and it was only their first year coming to NJ.

The more the merrier! The Relay belongs to every member of the forum, and we're definitely open to ideas and assistance. I'm lucky enough to find the time to moderate the Relay related portion of the forum, but have not been able to hold a candle to the monumental effort put forth by Jerry "RxMan" during the first relay as far as coordination/planning/communication/etc. Good thing he only works part time! I doubt that the 2011 relay would have been as successful as it was if Jerry was working full time.

OK... great!  I sent you a PM as well (before seeing your post).

Is the sign-up list up-to-date?  I was looking through it and was kind of surprised how few members we have signed-up between VA and MA.  I know in 2012 there were a lot more (not sure about 2013 as I couldn't participate).

It looks like GZ only skipped me and Prokop (70CB750)... Tripps is in western NY so he'll probably participate as it moves west.

Prokop... are you going to Barber?  I'm going, but not on my bike... I'll be trailering it as I'm hoping to participate in the race.
If that's the case we can still get a photo-op with GZ when we're down there.

Adam, don't worry about heading back down this way.  Let's keep GZ moving (maybe to Tino in Montreal?).  There are also a couple guys in Ontario (Brooze and Larecords) who could then maybe connect the dots to the either Tripps or the guys out in the mid west (and it looks like we got a whole bunch of guys in MI).

Also, the VRRA has an event on July 19th at the Grand Bend Motorplex - not too far from Brooze (3 hour ride?), which probably isn't too far from some of the guys in MI.... might be a cool event to meet-up at.

My plan for the relay was to reach to people in the area, once I had a definite date when I get my hands on GZ and if there was no other option to send him North I would take him to you - maybe with a stop to see Larry MoMo - because that's and easy and proven jump.

Unfortunately for last weekend I had long standing plans - taking my son to NYC to see Yankees play for his 16th birthday - and there was not a chance to alternate those plans.

But that's not important now, yes, I want to go to Barber in October.

As of now I think the best option is to send GZ West and make him cover as much ground as possible before October when he is due at Barber.

How about he comes back to PA in September and I get him from you or somebody in PA and move him to Barber?  Just a thought.

Hi Greg, that would be great, I'm still interested in participating this year if GZ finds his way back west.  I changed employers a few months ago, and so my PTO balance is low, but with a few weeks notice I should be able to make arrangements to take a few days off.

+1 to that. I missed out on the initial run out of CA so if/when Pimpzilla makes it back to the west coast count me in....

Is anyone against starting Topics by region like we had last year?  I think it made it a little easier to coordinate with area members and keep everyone in the loop.

Is the sign-up list up-to-date?  I was looking through it and was kind of surprised how few members we have signed-up between VA and MA.  I know in 2012 there were a lot more (not sure about 2013 as I couldn't participate).
Yes the list is up-to-date. I didn't add Frankencake yet, as he only posted a question, rather than actually signing up.
