i have a 4 into 2 exhaust system and the bike has been backfiring lately,have a carb ongoing problem,i have a flame shooting out  the 1&2 exhaust pipe,changed plugs,i think i am dumping to much gas in carb #1 because plug is fouled like crazy,sound like i am on the right trail?
all my problems started with carb rebuild kits since i have put eveything back to the oem,except where the needle on carb 1 goes into the guide i replaced that but can"t get it to seat all the way without destroying it,would that prevent the needles full range of vertical motion,also just checked timing and its dead on but jumps a little

Yes, most likely too much gas and its not all burning, then escapes out the exhaust valve and pipe.

didn't mention the other day a little smoke was coming out around the exhaust flange on #1 cyl. i owuld imagine i have a oil leak some where

or you reused the old copper exhaust crush rings, or forgot to replace with new ones.

You may want to re-check the valve lash too.  The exhaust could be leaking by.

My 550 did this briefly when I first got it back on the road. The issue was actually ignition related, not fuel. The tiny nut that connects the 1-4 condenser to the points had vibrated loose and was making intermittent connection. The result was very low power, poor idle, and flame belching backfires.
