sprocket shaft seal opinions
« on: August 23, 2013, 04:57:42 AM »
i've got a bit of a sprocket seal leak on my 1980 cb650. it's leaking around the outer edge, and i tried to band aid it a bit my smearing sealant around it, but obviously that didn't work.

here's the problem: the seal is 36x57x13 and is discontinued. i'm going to try ordering one from europe, but that's going to take a few weeks to get here and summer is fading fast.

i have sourced a replacement seal that is 36x58x8. will this squeeze in there?

is it possible to remove the original seal without damaging it, smear some sealant on the outer edge and then reinstall? it seems that the accepted removal method is sinking screws into it and pulling it out. are there alternatives?

all thoughts welcome!

When the K0 was new to me, the output shaft oil seal actually came loose on me while riding the bike around the back yard, if I remember correctly I cleaned it and tapped it back with just a hint of a sealant and it's been holding ever since.

So, yes, if you get it out without damage, you can get it back.

That said, if I were you I would not mess with it till I have a new and correct sized seal in my hand. Small oil leak is nothing compared to parking your bike before the season ends due to missing oil seal.

Hmm, these guys have it:

David Silver has one in stock. Grab it now, and you might have it by the end of next week.
