too bad I'm not an electrician
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:07:32 PM »
I'm trying to finish up the lights on my cb550 and the turn signals are throwing me for a loop. No matter which way I flip the switch both turn signals turn on solid at the same time and don't flash. I tested all the wires with a test light and nothing flashes. Am I missing something or is the flasher just bad possibly? And if it is how come they both turn on in either direction? Maybe I'm just a tard..

Electricians fix buildings not 12v systems.

You can figure this out and then YOU will have a skill that will last you a life time.

Get a schematic and especially  trace the left hand control. They are two separate circuits joined only at that control.

They are LEDs and I do have the diagram. The only wires left open on the harness are due the winkers. There are no "idiot lights" hooked up either. I might pull the control apart and have a look at what's inside tonight as well.

Are you using an electronic flasher with those LED's? The stock flasher wont work well with the LED's also check your ground wires and make sure they have good contact. My turn signals did all kinds of crazy stuff due to a bad ground.

If you are using an Electronic flasher relay, try reversing the two wires (black and grey).

there was already an electronic flasher relay on the bike. I did try reversing the black and grey wires and nothing changed. So I figured since they're $20 or less I might as well just buy a new one and see if that solves a problem and if it doesn't return it haha I will check the grounds physically as well. I did reverse probe them and grounds seemed good that way.

i run LED's only on my rear flashers just for this reason.  My K8 had the exact same symptom, this is why i asked.
no flash. just solid on.
change to standard bulbs in either the fronts or rears, and the problem will go away.

well I have the same symptoms with just the front lights plugged in and with just the rear lights plugged in. So I'm not sure if running standard bulb on the front and not the rear what make a difference. But I'll see what I can find and give it a shot

If you use the correct electronic relay...  they are not load sensitive, and will flash at the same rate, with, or without LED's/Lamps loading them, or high(14.5V), or low(12V) voltage supplied. Of course they will need to be installed properly. There are good, and bad electricians too. So just because they can wire, and repair, commercial, or residential 120/240 volt systems, does not necessarily mean they can't do an even better job on a 12 volt system. All depends on experience, knowledge, and the willingness to learn.

So I put in a new electronic flasher and that solved the solid light problem. The LEDs would still only slightly pulse not even making the flasher click. I disconnected the front right turn signal and introduced an incondesent bulb into the curcuit and that little bit of resistance Solved the problem... only on one Side at a Time though. I even put some in line resistors on both sides but that didn't work either. So I think I'm just going to replace the LED's on the front with incandescent bulbs and call it a day
