Adjustment for the cb750 cam chain
« on: August 21, 2013, 06:33:58 PM »
Ive searched and found several different ways to do this. I do not have a shop manual of any sort. I just got this bike it is a custom job the engine is a cb750 soch do not know what year mid 70's not a 77 or 78. The bike runs perfect one kick and it starts right up. But there is a cam chain noise what is the best way to do this I talked to a guy today he said put the engine top dead center and loosen the nut on the bottom and tighten it back up that's what he did with his and hasn't had any problems. Is it really this easy. I went to 2 different shops they are telling me it needs new cam chain ect ect. And want to charge 300.00 plus parts and labor. But if its easy ill do it myself. Can some one direct me to the right thread so I can read up on it I can not find anything thanks

Thank you guys for the info. I just adjusted it and its a lot better now. I was real nervous doing it. My brain doesn't work properly since my wreck so I get a little freaked out on certain things. Thanks again I'm happy now.

The crankshaft needs to be in the correct position.

Do it the way the manual says.

The internet has a lot of incorrect info. People just guessing at things.

Its your engine.

ya read the book the motor can be 180 degrees out even if 1&4 marks lined up,you have to remove the valve covers and check the valves on 1&4 they should be play

The cam chain tensioner was a little tight when sliding back into place would it hurt to shoot a little wd-40 in there to lube it up a bit.

WD-40 won't hurt it at all!!
1. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise till it is 15 degrees after TDC= the T mark to the left of T for no1, when #1 is TDC then both valves will be closed and the rocker arms will be loose for #1 cylinder.
2. loosen the 10mm bolt on the bottom of the adjuster, the adjuster is spring loaded and will automatically adjust the chain(if it is not stuck)
3. LIGHTLY tighten the 10mm bolt and then the lock nut. YOU'RE DONE!

Thanks for all the info the old bike is running good now. I started to tear it down and found the points wire (1-4) where messed up. It had a miss I thought it might have been the carbs the bike has set since 2010. Fixed the wire and man it really runs good here's a picture of its a ex show bike from the mid to late 70's it's a digger bike
