You're not gonna believe this.....550F survivor.
« on: August 25, 2013, 06:51:45 PM »
Saw this on Craigslist tonight. I called and the seller was shocked, saying it had only been listed for 5 minutes. Talked him into letting me come look at it (it was getting kind of late) and we shook hands on a deal tonight.

Back story: His family used to own the Honda/Suzuki dealership here in town. This was his first bike. He bought it new in 1976. The Lester mag wheels were installed before it left the showroom.
Here's the text from the Craigslist ad:

"1976 Honda CB550F Super Sport, Orange, 5065 original miles, one owner since her birth, all original except Lester rims. I have a set of spoke wheels that go with the bike though. I also have a Kerker exhaust system I use to have on it. I have a Shoei colored match fairing that has a couple of scratches from being in storage. I have two boxes of new old stock NOS parts, that include chrome plated engine parts that can be used to replace the older original parts one day. The bike if unrestored but in very good condition (only blemish is scratch on gas tank I included in pics). It starts and runs good but needs to be ridden more than I have over the past few years. I have the original owners manual and title."

Would you pay $2,000 for this? Because I sure did!! This one is a survivor. I don't plan on changing a thing, other than maybe detailing it a little bit. Oh, it has 400F bars on it, too. He did that back in the day in order to clear the Shoei fairing. Those and the Lesters will stay.
And the scratch he mentioned? It'll buff right out...

I'm so stoked I'm not sure I'll be able to go to sleep tonight!

He's gathering up all the paperwork and, even though I could have ridden it home, he's even going to deliver it in the next day or two! We were simply running out of time tonight, but there was no way I was going to let this one slip by without at least making an attempt.

If I did the fairing, I'd be tempted to run the Kerker, too. I could always swap 'em out, back and forth, huh? The fairing does have some chips in the paint on the LH side, from being in storage.

Hope you gave a deposit.....

Turns out we have mutual friends. I offered a deposit, he agreed on a handshake and exchanging info. I think him knowing my background, and the fact that I rode up on my '72 CB500/650 with Lesters, convinced him that I'm the guy that needs to own this bike.

Hmmm, I don't have the VIN in front of me right now, but do you think this could be a '75 build date bike?
The color for '75 was Flake Sunrise Orange and '76 was Shiny Orange. How much difference was there?
This bike has the black seat, the "550 Four" decal on the side cover and the dark green gauges. At least, they look dark green to me. The orange on the tips of  the needles isn't even faded!

I would.  It's possible they or the seat was changed for some reason. I see gauges in a box in that pic...
