Honda really give the US a bum deal on the 400 from what I’ve read about your models, footrests on the s\arm if you have a pillion makes those showa shocks go from bad to dangerous.

yes... but, as i plan to race the bike... there will not be many passengers

good 400f race parts?
do you have any?
where should i look?
terry... hows about a trick little oil pressure guage and cooler? he's probably not listening anyway.
should i make the fairing and seat/tail? if i'm gonna build a bike i should just build it right?
let's say my 400 motor is fried, which it very well could be... is it sacrilege to use my spare 350f motor.

my ebay scores for the week:

a one dollar 400f tranny (excellent shape) 15 dollars shipping
a one dollar set of 4 exhaust collars (ok shape, need beadblast) 15 dollars ship
a shifter for a few bucks too... totalling about 13

i think i did allright

I think the 400 was really intended as as solo machine only with the pegs added in case of emergencies. It's like calling the Porsche 911 a 4-seat car when the only people you care gonna get in the backseat are 6-year olds. I don't think the swingarm-mounted pegs are really a problem. Besides, it allows the passenger's legs to help the already-underpowered Showas with shock absorption, making it arguably the first bike with Active Suspension!!!

The 400 keeps getting cooler and cooler!!!

I do like the smaller UK winkers and taillight though. And the ability to turn the light off.

Chris, I have to say I was going along until you mentioned the CB450K, because in 75', the 74' CB450K7 became the CB500T(and was also produced in 76' in the states, not sure about overseas).
which was a 450 with a longer stroke, different spacing ratio-wise through the gears and a few other
differences in the motor, frame, forks, gas tank, seat and electrical for sure. Visibly, the motor appears the same from the outside view. Just thought you should know. After 76' I don't know what was considered to be the replacement for it. Later on, Bill

can't remember if i told you about this somewhere else...

i got a supertrapp to fit to the stock headers.

now that i've had some time to think about what i want the bike for it will definitely be a racer but, where should i start. recommendations on every thing from bearings to brakes i would appreciate.
i think i'll make the seat and rear cowl.

oh! this might be a good time to mention that i'll be receiving my last financial aid check for college so... if you have 400f parts to get rid of

i got up this morning and, if memory doesn't serve, i sleepwalked over to the computer.

i woke up shortly after noon when i noticed on craigslist a cb350... runs good, title, recently tagged and insured, 300 dollars. it was listed today and sold before i ever even read the post.... aaarrrrrrrrg

but, on the other hand i've had a good run of luck lately and thought i'd brag a bit.

a few minutes ago i won an ebay auction dyna ignition for the 400 and yesterday got a TIA oil cooler in the works and i can't forget the front fairing to be fitted thanks to mkramer.

all this fun stuff to play with and school starts back up in 2 days

but still, its a very exciting time

i've been holding off on the project for all sorts of reasons and i think i might finally be ready.
school, parts collecting on a budget, thought we were gonna move $:-\$ , etc... all kept me from digging in...

finally started carving up the old ebay seat. will need to have someone sew a seat cover for it as the shape is too complex for a simple 1 piece cover.

here's the old version of the seat(also in the previous picture too)... stock type, very bulbous and odd looking.

and the reshaped version...

3 layers of batting overlayed and glued on the front portion to smooth rough shaping
1 layer of batting on the rear just to hide any from showing thru the cover.

if you haven't caught on from this or other threads... it will be a vintage racer.

what i had in mind for the rear fender stays that stick out under the seat was to either cut them off in an upward sweep OR use the holes to fashion a number plate holder for each side... since i can't stick numbers on my fancy new carbon fiber side covers... i'm leaning toward making some number plates.

here's a thought i had after a few beers yesterday...

that active suspension we talked about on page two (passenger foot pegs on the swingarm)... anyone ever put rear sets back there w/ "swingable" linkage to the brake and tranny?

probably wouldn't be good for a track bike but might come in extremely handy at, oh say, bonneville... remember the fastest indian when he raises his head up to regain better control?

anyway...
